From Sales & Trading to private equity
Hi guys. I'm going to be a sales & trading intern at a top BB in Hong Kong this summer.
I wanted to know how a sales & trading (probably on the sales side but unsure) summer analyst could spin his experience and try to go into private equity (I know its an unusual exit op for S&T). Also would be awesome to hear from anyone who made the switch from sales & trading to private equity. Thanks.

Is it at all possible to move from high yield credit trading at a top firm to a Private Equity Mega Fund?
It can be doable if you move to credit PE. However, it is very hard, I would suggest you first move internally to something like lev finance.
How to go from S&T to PE? (Originally Posted: 03/04/2016)
I will be joining the S&T division of a BB after graduation this year, my long term goal is to make the transition into PE. What are the best ways to do so?
Obvious question- why in the hell did you go into S&T if you 'already know' that you want to do PE?
But to your question- you have 2 options:
1.) S&T -> Research/Desk Analyst -> Banking -> PE 2.) S&T -> BSchool -> Banking -> PE
Whatever you do, make sure you pick a fundamental product duringyour desk placement. Stay away from rates, derivatives, structured products, etc. ...
Why do you say to pick a fundamental product and can you give examples of what a fundamental product may be?

Is it possible to make the jump as a sales analyst (S&T) to PE. My bank (top BB) has a strong PE arm... by what means would you guys say the chances be greatest: moving internally or post-MBA?

hi gotta quick qn for you guys I have been a trader for an early part of my career (tier 1 BB, rotated through fixed income, algo, fx) and recently left my job. I have since changed geography from Asia to LATAM and looked for opportunities. I have found offers in BlackRock's PE and IBD in a local bank.
My qn is, should i still focus on S&T in Latin America or should i give PE/IBD a go? moreover, what are the skills i would need to sharpen up before starting work in a PE shop? Lastly, has anyone else made this move before and has it worked out for you?
Thanks a lot!!

How common is it to move from a S&T position on the corporate credit side of things to a PE firm?

Hey everyone - appreciate any thoughts/advice here. Long story short: have been trading interest rate derivatives at a well-known BB for four years out of college, and am looking to make the jump to PE. Is my only option pretty much going to b-school?
Would switching to a special sits group in my bank and working there for a few years be more ideal? The nature of my work is insanely analytical/mathematically rigorous, but admittedly, a few worlds away from assessing corporate balance sheets. Thanks again!
Also, as an addendum: has anyone ever done this before? Is it possible?

most people on the board say that the best way to get into private equity is banking (which is probably true). is it possible to go from trading to private equity? if so, are there any types of trading more suited to PE work (im guessing that vanilla swaps trading is not very relevant to the type of analysis that Blackstone does).
thanks in advance.
.
my understanding is no. maybe 1/1,000
PE and trading are completely different fields.
