Starting to get worried...
Hey guys, thanks for taking the time to read this, here's my dilemma. I'm currently a junior at a semi-target school, studying financial math and minoring in econ. I want to pursue consulting for full-time,but do not have anything lined up for this summer. I have a 3.7, worked at corporate finance and startup internships, and have solid leadership/extracurriculars. I had interviews with great firms this year, but unfortunately did not network and interview well enough to land a position.
What are your opinions on what I should do?
1) Work at a family business/e-commerce startup and do full-time recruiting
2) Do a 5th year and pick up another degree, re-recruit for summer internships
3) Apply to a masters program, re-recruit for summer internships
4) Continue cold-emailing boutiques
Really appreciate any feedback
You have previous experience and good GPA- why don't you have anything lined up? Did you not interview anywhere?
Anyway, I'd find something- ANYTHING- and spin it as a learning opportunity. Work for free if you have to. Volunteering can also be explained away for consulting.
Sorry, stopped reading before you mentioned you interviewed.
Seriously, work for an NGO, non-profit, something. These look great.
Never really considered it, but will definitely look into it! Thanks for the nice piece of advice
Offer to do remote internships with boutiques along with anything else that is interesting. Many banks would be willing to offer remote internships to you even if they don't have in-person internships.
To be honest, I never really explored banking, but would be willing to do anything at this point. What would banks expect me to know? I've only taken basic corporate finance and accounting courses.
If you've never explored banking, don't gun for boutique IB this summer. I think you'd just be wasting time that could be spent networking with boutique consulting firms. If the family business/start up is successful, I would consider doing it and spend time over the summer networking. If you have a lot of sway over what your role would be, I would just try and shape the role to be as close to consulting related as possible. Ex. make strategic proposals to the board or do some kind of market analysis.
I would definitely not pursue a masters. Picking up a second degree depends on a lot of personal factors as it is by no means a guarantee that you would end up at a MBB. I'd consider it if you don't think you'd be competitive for even tier two firms.
