Staying a 5th year at University? Worried...

Hey guys,

Just wondering what I should do, here's my position:

I'm really aiming to get into a great job, something in a bb or consulting. I've gotten quite a few interviews, but I just suck at interviews. I'm probably not going to get additional rounds after the initial interview, seeing as I'm competing with a ton of people.

Lets say one has an offer, say big four, commercial banking, things of that nature but aren't as prestigious and hard to get into as say ibanking right now. Would you wait around for an extra recruiting cycle and look for internships, so stay another school year, deferring graduation. OR take any job one can get? I really really hate settling for less and having gone to a target school with a high gpa, it would be a let down to work for just any company...

I know there have been some threads on this, but I really need some advice as it's going to cost money and be a big decision, not graduating on time. I'm hoping that internships will boost up my resume as a senior (non graduating).

Not sure what to do, people say its the market, it's probably me, I don't know...

Stay for a 7th year

...at that point you will be considered a doctor.

bro working at a big four, commercial banking have exit options but they depend on the person.

say you were working at deloitte consulting/audit etc. and your client was some F500, u'd be able to network with their finance/accounting guys and maybe make a move to their finance division, maybe then into their M&A group.

in commercial banking you do a lot of relationship building and u can stay there for a year or two and once the market picks (optimistically by the summer of 2010) you could lateral to a boutique or maybe to a more traditional IB role with one of the banks that co-managed a financing..

do not stay another year in school if you can work.

true i can't keep delaying

true i can't keep delaying graduation if I can't find a job, but considering the current market environment? i feel as if I have a stronger shot next year and that perhaps i'm not getting invited back because of a few spots being available.

It was more of staying an extra semester and taking advantage of the school's strong on-campus recruiting process, it's definitely more helpful than adding your name to a general pool of applicants...

if you mean staying an extra

if you mean staying an extra year to add on a masters degree then that could work, but otherwise, no one's going to be impressed with a candidate who took 5 years to graduate just to game the job market. go for an advance degree or take the best job available now.
