Strange item in contract - any cause for worry?
Curious to have any thoughts on my case. I am currently in equity research and I've verbally agreed to an offer for an in-house strategy sort of position at a European C&IB. It will be focused on a new product area and the head of the function actually has a headcount in the corporate bank (that was his earlier background), while reporting into the head of the CB and another division. I was told all along that my headcount would be within the markets business, but I would report into this person. Both of us have a bank-wide mandate.
Received an outline of the contract today and it surprisingly listed my division as the corp bank. When I asked HR about this, I was told that my headcount is definitely under markets, but it says CB for systems alignment purposes because i'll report into someone whose headcount is in the CB. I was assured that there is no other practical implication. It still seems to be an odd arrangement and I'm wary of being unwittingly rebranded. At the same time, I don't want to seem fussy or arrogant by suggesting that I don't want to be associated with the CB. Should this be a sticking point? Can it really have no implication as they say?
Have you ever met anyone who calls up your previous employer to speak with HR and verify which internal department classification your previous or current job is?
I honestly don't know if this might be flagged in a future background check. Say this job doesn't work out and I want to go back into an equity research or sales role. A classification as a corporate banker would seem bizarre and it might be only my word that I was in fact in markets all along. Is there a way to demonstrate where my headcount resided, if it's not on the contract?
1) Sounds like a non-issue and just legal structuring/wording of the document. 2) Sounds like they aren't going to change it for you. 3) If your resume shows you doing all of the functions your current role entails and a future employer somehow found out and for some reason made a big deal about it, would it not be explainable in 2 seconds?
Edit: Don't let the 'man' punk you. Stay strong and fight the good fight.
