Summer Internships>Does Location matter?
I was just wondering if applications for summer internships would be more competitive in EMEA offices ie/ London compared to Asia Pacific offices like Hong Kong?
If there is a difference between regions..is it easier to be accepted for an internship in Australia compared to Hong Kong?
Also, does anyone know which investment banks allow multiple applications for different offices? Because as far as I'm aware I think only Citi allows it.
goldman asks you to pick top 3 locations... i think most banks allow multiple locations, but you have to rank them
Does the Location of your Internship Matter? (Originally Posted: 03/03/2016)
Hi fellow monkeys,
I was wondering if the location of one's sophomore internship really matters to recruiters. For example, is an IB internship in NYC "better" than an IB internship in a city like Houston or Dallas, assuming that both internships are equal in every other way?
Thanks!
I wouldn't think so, TBH. I worked at a BB in Buffalo, NY which is a very irrelevant city in the grand scheme of things. It helped me throughout my journey and I've managed to secure a BB IB role in Houston (chose Houston over NYC). Buddies from my department have gone on to San Fran and NYC with no issues. NYC, San Fran, Houston, Chicago I look at as the same, only difference is preference.
For your sophomore summer, probably (but not really). If it isn't in NY, you are going to get the "Why NYC?" question much more often. Frankly, I think it's dumb to ask to anyone at all - we all know why you want to be in NY. So from that regard, yes it does matter. But not really because it's a dumb question and easy to answer.
Where I do think it comes into play more is if you do everything around one area. For example, I grew up in the south, go to school in the south, and did my internship in the south. I got "Why NYC?" so many times, (and maybe it was just me) but I felt like they were asking it in a way that was implying I was a soft southern boy who couldn't make it in the "big time."
TL;DR - Just be able to answer "Why NY?" in interviews and then soph. internship location won't matter at all.
Does an Internship's location matter? (Originally Posted: 10/12/2017)
I live in a city with not too much on the side of investment banking (theres a couple investment banks, but thats about it). My question is, would an internship at a smaller branch be less prestigious/affect my chances as opposed to doing an internship at the same firm in a bigger city? Thanks for the help.
I would say that it depends on the firm and whether they have top groups in the city. Since we are most likely talking about a small bank then I would go for their largest office. You'll have more opportunities to network with coworkers and other people in the industry if your in NY as opposed to Buffalo.
Location of PE Internship (Originally Posted: 08/12/2012)
Hi guys,
It's my first post on WSO! I've tried the search function but nothing really relevant has come up.
Question: I've been offered an internship at a PE firm. The internship can be in one of the 3 locations:
Singapore (HQ) Hong Kong Shanghai
I was just wondering which location would look better to a prospective recruiter or if the location matters at all. I've heard and read that certain locations are seen to be more prestigious and harder to get into than others. That in itself could be a differentiating factor. Any thoughts on this? Assuming I want to work in the Asia Pacific region in the future.
Thanks!
