SUNY - Do I have a chance?
SUNY - Do I have a chance?
let's cut straight to the chase
I'm an international. I go to SUNY. Major Finance. GPA 3.9/4.0
I had my mind set to get a U.S college education and decided to go to SUNY,
mostly becuz their tuition was affordable.
Otherwise, I would've gone to a school in my country.
I couldn't get any ibanking internship offers so far, so I did internships at
commercial banks and IT consulting firms in my home country.
I went searching for alumni but found none. career office couldn't help.
Peeps say the name SUNY is just too weak for investment banking and
my chances are even worse considering my nationality.
One of my c advisors even recommended to transfer to a top school back in Asia like Hong Kong.
What do you guys think? This seems like a potential turning point in my life.
Which SUNY? Binghamton is not that bad and if you did math at Stony brook particularly stats or combinatorics and did well its comparable to MIT. Other Suny's suck balls if you say Albany you might as well have gone to a CC
You have a chance, the problem is that your chances are limited, this means that you have to go above and beyond. The key is that you need to network, network and network.
If you have the chance to transfer to a better school with greater IB exit opps I would do it. If you really want IB the extra debt load is worth it. Also, your GPA of 3.9 shows your smart and can handle harder classes.
I can vouch for CUNY at least. 2 Baruch kids at my super day, one of my higher ups is a Baruch alum with a bunch scattered about., I know at least one Binger.
Baruch might just be an exception since it is known as a Quant factory.
SUNY's name is definitely very weak. Alumni network won't be much of help. Plus the fact that you're not american puts you in a next-to-impossible position. (burp! tarp?!)
The reason you went to SUNY in the first place was because the school was cheap! I'm guessing you probably wanted and could go someplace like UMich but didn't have the money and they don't give financial aids to international students either.
Its fine. You have good GPAs and good experience. It shows that you can handle more. If you can transfer to a prestigious school back in Asia where the tuition is more affordable for you, you can succeed there. Aim for schools like Tokyo university, Hong Kong University or NSU which local IB offices recruit heavily from. The SUNY title just degrades you and make people underrate your ability IMO.
Transfer if you can stomach it but take everything into account not just career advancement
You can make it from a SUNY you just need to push hard, dont let anyone tell you otherwise
If you want to work in Asia then go for it, but if you want to start in the US keep that in mind as well
every non-target school has cream of the crop students who would excel at whatever they do.
i'd second those who focused on networking since your studies seem to be in order. i no this didn't add much value to what everybody else said, but it really is that simple.
Probability wise, it will be easier for you to break into ibanking in Asia than in US. With some exp under your belt and perhaps with a MBA degree in the future, you can have better chances then in US
Thanks guys. I think I'm leaning towards transferring back to Asia. Appreciate your advice!
Good call. SUNY schools are all terrible in terms of investment banking recruiting! Not a place to stay if you're serious about IB. The name will follow you forever and haunt you down and you'll end up being a teller in a crappy commercial bank, unless you get a top MBA. Good Luck in Asia.
Everyone has a chance.
The question is; "can you take that chance and make the most of it?"
I'm currently going through the same thing except I'm in my first year at CUNY community college in NYC and I'm doing everything in my power to ensure I get a smooth transfer to Columbia or NYU. I'm registering for every internship/program I can find that will boost my resume while maintaining a 4.0. I'm also going to call both schools and try to build a personal relationship with some one in the transfer admissions department, you should do the same with the school of your choice. I've learned to stop doubting myself and just make it happen. The GPA part at SUNY should be easy, you just have to put in some work in your resume and networking skills, you can make it happen, believe in it.
Binghamton isn't bad, and Geneseo is getting better. These are the toughest to get into. I go to one of them and I can tell you that recruiting has gone from purely insurance sales and retail management to Big 4 and various BB functions, mostly BO though.
It will be tough, but it can be done. Network within your school's alumni and branch out from there. Using it as a crutch isn't going to help you or anyone else.
