Superbowl recap...

Wow, heart broken (i'm from Seattle). Threw a superbowl party down here in BA, good mix of Hawks and Pats fans. A few thoughts:

-By far the most emotional game I've ever seen in my life. One of the best Super Bowls ever? Even though we lost, and today feels like crap, I still had a great time... hell of a game.
-Congrats to @"wallstreetoasis.com", you deserve it.
-I'm not freaking out at that last play call, one play didn't decide the game. Pete is an aggressive guy, that's what got us here. Patriots stepped up and made a great play (Butler/Browner said they practiced that exact play andButler says he got burned on this same play on Thursday). I can't bring myself to watch the replay on that yet so I can't give any more analysis.
-That said, I WISH WE HAD RAN THE BALL. Even though the whole world knew we wouldve been running, we wouldve got one of those three attempts in.. right?
-Kearse's catch before that... ridiculous!!!! David Tyree esque. I'm still in shock/awe that we even made it to the 5 yard line.
-Looking at the stats, the Patriots played near perfect; they dominated the first half AND the first quarter and we were still within one play of winning the game. We got lucky once (win against Packers)... Bellichick wasn't going to let that happen again.
-We're going to lose some players but as long as John Schneider keeps having genius drafts we will be back...
-Just heard it had a 49 TV rating?!? Best 4 hours of TV i've ever seen.

Thoughts on the game? Is Brady the best QB ever (barf)? Anyone win some $$$? Favorite Commercial? Katy Perry WTF?

I thought Katy Perry was a good halftime show, way better than Brutal Mars last year. I agree with your take on Pete, guy is a gambler and that is the only reason the Hawks got as far as they did (fake fg against GB, end of first half throwing with :06 left, so many more).. any one of those misfires and they are nowhere close at the end. We wouldn't even be talking about it if Marshawn had gotten in that prior play, that being said... give him the rock and I don't think he could have been stopped.

Amazing game and I am glad I wasn't a fan of either side because I don't think I could have survived it.

This to all my hatin' folks seeing me getting guac right now..

I was going to write a post on the Super Bowl, but I was on such an adrenaline rush last night that I could not sit still and write a post. I had a hard time sleeping last night and am still amped up.

  1. Best Super Bowl I've ever seen, and I can't think of one with a more dramatic ending. Super Bowl XXIV (Montana coming from behind on a 10 play 80-yard drive to beat the Bengals), Super Bowl XXV (Bills kicker barely missing the field goal to lose to the Giants by one point), and Super Bowl XXXVI (Vinateri making the field goal to beat the heavily favored Rams for the Patriots' first Super Bowl win) all had great endings, but last night was utterly insane. Kearse's catch and Butler's interception almost back-to-back is simply unprecedented. As a Patriots fan, I nearly had a heart attack and had a hard time breathing after the game. I was running around the bar screaming and jumping after the interception. People literally thought I was a mad man, but I could've cared less.

  2. Seahawks are a damm good team, and I feared them from the beginning. There's a few free agents who are up for grabs, but the core will be around, so they're not going anywhere. They are the favorite to make it to the big game next year, and I expect them to win more rings.

  3. The victory cements the legacy of Brady and Belichik and vindicates the team. Deflategate will go down as a fake sports "scandal" which served as a mere distraction from the greatness of the Patriots as well as an epic Super Bowl game. Brady cements his status as the GOAT quarterback. His accomplishments within the context is astounding. Brady has managed to win 4 super bowls and made 6 super bowl appearances despite a fairly mediocre offensive cast. Aside from himself and Randy Moss, I don't think any Patriots offensive player made the Pro Bowl. Brady had to work with what he was given, which was oftentimes woefully inadequate. But he did not bitch about it and instead worked hard and simply MADE IT HAPPEN. His talent, work ethic, and character are remarkable. The Patriots are always about keeping your head down, grinding, adapting, and WINNING. They don't rest on their laurels but instead continue to look forward. I guarantee you that Belichik and Brady are already thinking about the 2015 NFL season and figuring out how to repeat. That type of insatiable hunger permeates the team, and it is an ethos that I personally relate to.

Worst play call in the history of the NFL, I'd say. Why would you run a slant on the 2 yard line with a time-out and three more downs? And you have Marshawn, of all people... I lost money because of that shit...

I am still in shock that ended the way it ended... I also agree that everyone is bitching that in retrospect that it was a "horrible" play call. Unconventional, sure, horrible, not really. Marshawn has just as much a chance of fumbling there as the Pats have of getting an interception. Worst case scenario there 99% of the time is they collide and the ball falls incomplete. Props to Butler there for jumping the route...

I think@"AndyLouis" assessment was very fair. The Hawks just stick around even though for most of the first half they couldn't move the ball at all and the Pats could. The fact that it was 14-14 at half time made me think it was over. We had blown it and wasted a solid half.

But once the D held up a few times in 4th and Brady scored the third touchdown to make it 21-24, I knew he would finish the job (like he has done in EVERY Superbowl). I just didn't know if the defense would hold up at the end...and when Kearse comes down with that ball, with probably the most miraculous lucky / unlucky catches in the history of the SB, I thought it was over.

They should have never even been on the 5 yard line, so Carroll's play call and Butler pick was like a freakish justice playing out from the Football Gods that wanted to give both fans heart attacks...point is, if that pick/slant works, everyone is calling him a genius for not running and being unpredictable / catching the Pats off guard. I think the fact that the Pats had already stuffed Lynch in multiple 3rd and short opportunities in the game had something to do with that decision.

Overall, just an amazing game...also had some non-Pats friends over and when I started screaming like a mad man after the INT, they all looked a bit concerned / scared...

I thought Katy absolutely killed it, that was the coolest half time show I've ever seen. When she started floating away on that star thing I lost it. That dancing sharks were pretty cool too. I mean how could you not love this thing...

"My name's Ralph Cox, and I'm from where ever's not gonna get me hit"

I thought the brawl was one of the most entertaining things I've seen, for anyone who says "be a professional and hold yourself to a higher standard" doesn't understand that these guys are battling their hearts out and have a ton invested in such a physically demanding game, i get that that its not ideal but i'm not going to hold it against anyone, good to see some passion

Great game, the play call was a bad move by Carroll I know he is agressive but there was no need to be aggressive in that situation he out thought himself on that one. But that was not the play that decided the game, it was actually amazing that Seattle had the lead as they were outplayed most of the game. Kind of happy football is over now (that could partly be due to me being a Bears fan), a little burnt out from it.

I think the halftime shows are garbage. Prince killed it and was the best show I've ever seen, but Missy Elliot is no longer relevant. Who the hell thought she was a great artist to target a demographic? You usually get a big name classic rock artist, and a pop star. Not a washed up 2000 hip hop chick and a pop star. She should be allowed to watch it from the stands, but that's it. As long as they require the musicians to be unplugged, and make the singers lip-sync, it's just a theater act to me. Good production, but it isn't music. It's a fucking recording.

Did you notice when the 3 initial girls came on stage with Katy though? There was 1 Asian, 1 African American and 1 Caucasian. Talk about political correctness.

Haha! Great point. Gotta play fair... maybe they should've just gotten the Village People to perform instead. WAYYY more politically correct.

Best Super Bowl I've watched. In hindsight it's easy to question the play call now that it failed but if it did succeed everyone would be talking about how it was a brilliant play call as the Pats were expecting the run. Wilson could have thrown the ball a tad bit better but in reality Butler made an amazing play on the ball. Credit to Brady and Co. for keeping composure and not letting the game get out of reach.

Otherwise the commercials were pretty funny and the halftime show lived up to the hype save for Lenny Kravitz's performance. He played for ~30 seconds but was a headliner? I was really hoping to hear him play a few iterations of his classics.

gotta disagree a bit there Patrick. they had timeouts, so you give lynch a chance or do a qb sneak, stop the clock if they don't make it, and try it again. you have the chance for 2, maybe 3 plays (forget what down it was) before time runs out, pass as last resort because the odds don't favor it in that situation.

Marshawn has fumbled the ball 26 times in his 8 year career. Russell has thrown 26 picks and fumbled 9 times in his 3 year career. I think you give the ball to beast mode.

but, I am also glad the Pats won so that the bandwagon hawks fans here taste of what I felt 2 weeks ago when the Packers went down in flames. there's lots of them in the southeast because Russell went to NC State and is from Richmond (also because the Falcons, Redskins, and Panthers are awful), will be nice to see them shutup for a while.

they only had ONE Time out left and 3 shots...if you run and don't make it then you are FORCED to call the time out (Marshawn was 0-5 in runs from the 1 yard line on the season, so it's not a SURE THING, especially with the Pats playing a heavy package and having stuffed him multiple times in the game already)

then you are FORCED to throw it on 3rd down with no time outs and less than 20 seconds left...in other words, 2nd down was exactly the right time to try a throw, especially when run was expected. I'm not saying I would have called it that way, I'm just saying that looking at the statistics and #s makes it a much more understandable move.

good article that disagrees with the decision, but goes over the reasoning: http://grantland.com/the-triangle/super-bowl-new-england-patriots-seatt…

Lockette had 20 pounds and 3 inches on Butler and Butler laid him OUT. And he picked the ball. The fact he got blindsided means he never thought Butler would be there in coverage.

Wilson: 11 INT in 523 attempts before the last play, INT percent of 2.1%. Lynch: 5 FUM in 343 attempts or 1.4%. The additional 0.7% of risk probably was offset by the matchup they liked with a rookie safety in the game (butler).

Sucks for the seahawks, the patriots busted their pocket aces at the final table with everything on the line.

It's tougher to pass in the red zone, esp on the 1 yard line than the rest of the field. I'd be interested to see the INT probability given the field position.

They did show a stat via Twitter (not sure how accurate) that Beastmode is 0-5 TDs with the Seahawks in goal line carries from the 1 before this game. More to throw fuel to the fire, but I still would've gone with Lynch.

Very biased fan myself being from MA, but that was the best game I've seen in a long time. Brady has to be the best of all time, most SB's played in, many records, the list goes on. Was able to get away with a good amount of money as well....great day all around.

Brady is obviously a good quarterback. Why do so many think he is the best, when it is a team sport? Adrian Peterson and Barry Sanders are obviously pretty good at their position, but nobody judged them on their Super Bowl wins. Why QBs only? Clearly Dan Marino is better than Trent Dilfer, no? Honest question.

Stems from QBs having the most control in any game. They are given the most responsibility. Yes they take play calls, but when you become a top tier QB, many of the plays are changes they have made from identifying weaknesses to attack. Whereas an RB just follows directions, takes a handoff, and does the best he can.

Barry Sanders was a force of nature; Trent Dilfer was mediocre.....guess who won a Super Bowl? Walter Payton was a beast; Jim McMahon was mediocre.....guess who won a Super Bowl? I've heard the argument about the QB a million times, I guess I was hoping for something a little more original.

Talking from a pure strategy standpoint, the pass on second down was technically the correct play. The choice of play however wasn't really that great. A slant over the middle when you are on the one yard line is pretty stupid. A pass option would have been a better choice with the target being the corner of the end zone. If its a catch it's game over, if not you have a time out and two chances with Lynch to blast it down the middle.

how about a play action (d was ready for the run), wilson rolls out to the right, set up to have 2 wr's in back corner and another streaking across the middle (from the left side). i'm sure there's a name for this play call... sounds like a winner to me

Worst case he throws it away, his feet make him twice as dangerous too. How about a fade to the 6'5" dude who had been snagging balls all game?

All good statistical points but you are only guaranteed one down in that situation not three. Lynch rushed 24 times that game averaging 4.3 yards per carry (only 2 attempts were less than a yard). Granted, goal line scenario is different but against the 9th best rushing defense in the league I am taking beast mode in a better than 50/50 chance to score. He looked unstoppable in that game over short distances. Great game.

situational football makes all the difference. Trying to get 1 yard when the defense is selling out and stacking the box is MUCH harder... which is evidenced by the fact that he was 1 in 5 in goal line situations over the 2014 year. Yes, Beast Mode gets stuffed, actually 80% of the time on goal line this year.

~98-99% of the time that pass is either a TD or incomplete, and then you can run or pass on both 3rd and 4th down because of the time out. You have the luxury of running on both 3rd and 4th down if that pass falls incomplete. If you run and get stuffed on 2nd down, you can't run on 3rd.
