Support functions Living in NYC?

Hey everyone

My bad if this is in the wrong section.

Looking for some advice... feel free to comment.

Working for about 1.5yrs now in a trade support role (sell side) in efforts to advance/move into a TA role (internal or external)
Make a competitive salary with OT for my age 23-25 in the type of role I am in.

I currently live in LI (at home) with a 1.20 hr commute door to door. honestly.. not terrible
Typical trade support market hours (in around 6:30-7am) and out around ~6pm. Averaging around 11-12hrs a day.

I recently had an opp to move out with potential roommates in NYC, but I am hit with a bit of a mental struggle... save the cash and tough it out? or move out of the parents crib and pay the 1200-1400 in rent i would/could be saving each month.

I've got savings in the bank from the first yearish of staying home so its easy and will be able to keep me afloat if something happened.

i only ask this question to see/ask how many of you fellow wso'ER out there are aspiring ibankers, traders, FO positions that live in NYC with our ok salary VS that of the rainmakers out there. Any suggestions?

Do your parents make you leave your bedroom door open when you have a girl over?

In all seriousness, how much money are you spending on the commute? I assume with the monthly passes it's close to $400...so in incremental terms you would only be spending $800-900 more if youre paying that $1200 to $1300 in rent. Plus the time you save every day, plus having more fun...probably worth moving out.

yep the door gets to be closed. isnt that cool?

on a serious note...

commute is around 325 all in monthly train/subway. would still have a subway pass in i moved in so realistically looking at saving ~250 on train monthly

I didn't add in any expenses for utilities, groceries, etc...You would pretty much end up paying extra for the convenience and some extra freedom that comes with living in NY and away from your parents.

As a side note, doesn't matter what role you are in. Support functions or not, a lot of them live in NYC and live comfortably. So don't base your decision on your role within the firm.
