Switching career from Law

Hello

I graduated with a LLB from a UK target in 2008 with a 2:2 (just short of a 2:1). I did the Bar and then practiced in Litigation for a year abroad. I've come to decide that this is not the career for me. About 6 months ago I started researching equities (mostly stocks and options) and simulating trades so that I could do it as a hobby . The more I look into it the more passionate I become about it. I've also been looking into commodities trading recently and that looks quite interesting as well. In short I am very interested in breaking into Trading as a career now. I'm still only 24.

What would your advice tobe to how someone with my background could go about breaking into Trading a bank or a commodities firm and what sort of banks/firms should I be looking at ? I understand I am in a difficult position and am even willing to start in another department and then work my way into Trading.

Well I have gone ahead and researched it. I haven't had any luck thus far finding anything specific switching from a non -finance non numerical career to trading. Ive already done an advanced course in Excel and and some basic financial modelling, taking up some math and business courses at a uni soon to possibly do a conversion msc economics if i dont get anyhting by this time next year. netwroking is the one advice that I have come across that everyones been citing so would that be my only route? any ideas on what else i can do which would stand out on a trading application?

Ah. How about if I try an operations role and try to move in from there. Would I have a higher chacne of getting in to middle office/back office instead of any of the front office roles?

No expert, but if you're excel skills are solid and you've knowledge of financial modelling, perhaps looks at equity research or general quant research firms. Building experience seems the only way forward for you. Unless you go back to school to try and mitigate your undergrad GPA. If you graduated from the Russell Group of unis, some firms still look favourably at that. Do some research, talk to careers advisers at your university, some still help after graduation. Good luck

That's a good idea. Pretty much all I did during my one year at the law firm was research and analyze so that may come in handy. I shall research into this analyst position. As for the GPA I may not need to. I didn't have the biggest social circle while at uni (LSE) but everyone I know with a 2:2 ended up getting a good job in the City. Applying for jobs/off cycle internships in the meanwhile and keeping a Masters as a backup. Fingers crossed I'll hopefully find a good job in the City in the coming year. Thank you for your help!
