Talking to Headhunters

I am going into my second year at a MM.

I sent my CV to a couple of headhunters a month ago and I have been receiving e-mails about other IBD positions, however I was not seriously considering moving up until now.

My question is - can you ask the HH which firm it is and then say that you don't want to interview with that firm? The HH obviously doesn't work for me and they are likely going to get pissed if I do this a number of times and I would not like to give them an impression that I am wasting their time. The reason for this is that:
1) Currently getting crushed on 2 live deals and will have limited opportunities to pull out the sick card in the coming months
2) Obvs I don't want to waste my time interviewing for a "lower tier" bank and like most people I would likely only entertain a move to a BB / EB
3) I don't want people from my team to find out that I am interviewing

Any input is much appreciated. I have not been in the recruitment process since I interviewed for my summer internship so I hope the above is sensible when it comes to lateral moves.

Best Response

TearsOfTheSun, I lateraled into a MM after working for a boutique for a year and am going through a similar process. In my experience 99% of IB offers from recruiters are at "no-name" boutiques. Granted, this might be because I'm at a MM because my friends at BBs occasionally do get recruiters reaching out about BBs and EBs.

You can always respond back with "please send me a job description and firm name". I do this every time because, like you, I'm busy and don't have time for a 30-minute call just to find out it's a boutique that I have no interest in working at. I wouldn't worry about pissing off recruiters. These people see your IB experience and their eyes light up with dollar signs. They need you to get paid, so just be professional, but don't worry about pissing anyone off.

EDIT: Avoid Selby Jennings at all costs. These guys post positions that are always magically filled once you respond.
