Best Tech groups in NYC?
I'm a bit confused about these BB tech groups. It seems like the top ones (MS, GS, CS) are all in SF/Menlo Park. Do these banks still have a group in NYC? Is it not as good?
For instance, when people talk about GS TMT, are they referring to the group based in the west coast or the east?
GS TMT is based in SF, so I would assume people are usually referring to them. I'm pretty sure all these banks have TMT in NYC also though.
Generally, MT is based out of NYC, Tech is based out of SF. All banks have Tech groups out of NYC that cover tech companies east of the Rockies (roughly), so mostly semis and whatever else is in the midwest and east coast, and not your Google, Apple, etc that are in SF.
If you talk to ppl in GS TMT in NY, they'll say they work on mostly media and telecom deals, and less tech.
^^ That's about as well as you can really break it down when speaking in general terms. It obviously depends on the bank but mostly media and telecom is covered in NYC while tech is covered in SF. Although, I disagree about the semis statement above - most of those companies are based in the Valley ( it's called silicon valley for a reason) or down in SoCal. There are some based in Texas and Mass, but those are few and far between.
GS TMT is not "based" in SF. GS TMT covers several verticals on the East coast, namely IT services and hardware. The SF office covers all the other verticals (software, digital media, semis, etc.).
^ Yeah, I'm not too sure, but I was told by people in the office that they're technically "based" there. Of course, NYC and SF are going to cover different things, but I think the majority of the Tech group is in SF. Correct me if I'm wrong...
Is this the same for MS as well? Would it not be smart to apply for NYC office saying you want to do tech?
cs tech seems to have dropped over the past year. how do you think they'll do now that boutros and other senior people have left the firm for qatalyst, code advisors, etc.?
Citi tech in NY focuses on services and some software, and they do most of Citi international tech deals
AstonMartin, MS Tech in NY covers the eastern 2/3 of the US. As far as I know, they cover every subsector, including clean tech. Not sure if it's 'smart' or not to apply to the NY tech group, but it is definitely smaller.

Which banks have tech groups in NYC? I'm interested in the sector but do not want to live in California.
all of them...
Yup, name a BB that doesn't have some of their tech group out in NYC. Although MOST of the Tech business is done in Silicon Valley, there are still quite a few verticals flowing through NY. Electronics, gaming, and some semiconductors.
If you're really interested in the tech space, you'd be a complete idiot not to get out to SF / Silicon Valley.
Actually, just moved from SF to NY, and plan to stay for a lot of personal reasons (my wife is from the east and never wants to move so far away from her family and friends again, especially if I am working crazy hours in banking).
I met some guys from DB (admittedly not a BB) last week and they told me that their entire tech group is in SF, and the don't hire into that group out here. Is this the case with any other banks? Any other banks that have a particularly strong NYC Tech group?

Which banks (both BB and MM) have tech-specific groups in New York? I tried to research on CapitalIQ and via company websites, but it is often difficult to tell which groups are located where.
Obviously most banks have their tech groups out West, but it would be good to know if the opportunity to work in a tech group exists on the East coast (preferably New York, DC, or Atlanta in that order). Thanks.
DB and Blackstone tech are both in Boston.
BX very recently opened an office in Menlo Park - they may be trying to shift operations there or it might be just a satellite office though I'm not sure.

Any leads here would be much appreciated. Would still like to apply to a couple more banks this semester.
Check out Morgan Stanley. Great shop if you haven't heard of them. Citi, too.
Try Jordan Edminston Group if you have an interest in digital marketing.
