Tesla Solar Roof could cost less than a regular roof

Elon Musk has once again made another big announcement upon the acquisition of a company. He stated that he believed that the Tesla Solar Roof will cost less than a regular roof.

Musk told the crowd that he had just returned from a meeting with his new solar engineering team. Tesla’s new solar roof product, he proclaimed, will actually cost less to manufacture and install than a traditional roof—even before savings from the power bill. “Electricity,” Musk said, “is just a bonus.”

Here's the article.

This could prove to be revolutionary news for the solar power industry. If what Musk claimed is true, they will not be many reasons for anyone to adopt the traditional roof over a solar power one given that it saves power and is cheaper.

Thoughts on this?

Always amazed by Musk. Recently checked out the Tesla X and S. thoroughly impressed. On top these things are also quite stable value wise in the secondary markets.

I'm talking about liquid. Rich enough to have your own jet. Rich enough not to waste time. Fifty, a hundred million dollars, buddy. A player. Or nothing. See my Blog & AMA

How much are those regular roof top mounted solar panel systems right now? Regular cheap home roofing is like $1-$2/sf

?? Negative....I just paid $6,200 for a new roof for a 1200 sq ft house. Are you talking about materials only or labor as well? I think roofing labor is pretty cheap because of the undocumented immigrant thing.

Go read his biography. He's known for often promising more than he can deliver. However, it doesn't change the fact that he's a visionary and willing to risk all his capital to change the world. It's too rare to find anyone like him in tech sector nowadays.

Very impressed by the new roof top as well, although I doubt he's talking about the upfront capital (or expense). Probably NPV over the life? lol

Considering you can generate revenues from net metering, I suppose one can capitalize them vs. pure maintenance expenses treatment for traditional roof top. It will be appealing to relatively high-income households who can fork out the cash for these.
