Text formatting on WSO

Just wondering if we can have standard text formatting options in button-format on WSO. It's rather cumbersome to use the code every time emphasis is required. Is it possible to have the most basic options like bold, italics, underline and bulleted/numbered lists as buttons?

Another unrelated thought: Why not show SB's and MS's on posts and comments separately? I feel it might be better to know that 3 people gave SB's but 2 also threw MS, rather than just seeing a lone SB.

Thoughts?

Right now we have a "Content Score" which = SBs less MS for any given piece of content. We might be able to get rid of that and somehow show how many SBs and how many MSs there are, just not sure how to do it cleanly...maybe every time someone does a +SB it could have a small blue "+#" in the upper right of box and on the MS it could have a "-#" representing the number of MS thrown at that content...my concern is how to make it look clean and still be able to read the #s...also ,we'd need a ton of additional icons in order to make this work. Say 50 SB icons (since sometimes posts get up to 50 SBs) and 50 MS icons...let me think of how we'd be able to display that and how the database stores the SB/MS votes. If it's just storing a "net" # on each piece of content, may be much harder to pull that out and store each # in a new table...

As far as introducing a WSYWIG editor, we've tried that in the past and it's been very buggy and ends up majorly messing up the site layout, but we'll look into it again.

Thanks for the suggestions! Patrick

You could consider something similar to YouTube style - silver banana icon followed by # and brown monkey sh*t icon followed by #. Not sure why we even need a net score if we use that kind of format.

Reason I'm suggesting is that there's been a spate of users very generous with the use of SB and MS, so it would be very helpful to know how many people like a post/comment and how many disagree with it.

But yes, I understand it could be difficult changing the content score for existing posts to this format. But if this idea is good enough, maybe you could consider using it prospectively?

As for the formatting suggestion, it'd be great if you could look into it. Would definitely making formatting a whole lot easier for those who are not familiar at all with html. Just yesterday I saw a post where the user had actually used the phrase "strong-bolded text-/strong" all over his post.

Move along, nothing to see here.

To disply the +/- and total score: 1. Expand the scorebox size a bit 2. Make the top part the total score 3. Break the bottom third into two halves 4. On on side, color it red and put the poo count 5. On the other, color it green and put the SB count 6. Leave any blanks white 7. .... 8. Profit?

Get busy living

Patrick, another "suggestion" and a bit off-topic, on LinkedIn have you considered using the WSO (displayed next to the monkey logo) with wallstreetoasis under it, as the company logo that shows up on employees/interns profiles? I think it looks much more sleek and professional than the monkey, but just my opinion. Site continues to improve, thanks for the hard work.
