The future of higher education is here!

"In what is shaping up as an academic Battle of the Titans — one that offers vast new learning opportunities for students around the world — Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Wednesday announced a new nonprofit partnership, known as edX, to offer free online courses from both universities."

Pretty hot environment with Princeton, UPenn, Michigan in the mix, plus VC-backed Udacity and Coursera.

Everything will be online based and low cost. No more traditional campuses except for Upperclassman classes (300 level and above). That would be ideal, have the kids learn from videos and work in spare time. Save time and money!

attend "campus college" for certain classes your final two years of study.

Although that would set the "social learning curve" back a few

Eventus stultorum magister.

Interesting. I know that people see any form of online education versus "real" college as far less prestigious, but in the future, if I were looking through resumes, I would certainly be impressed by someone who got (part of) their degree through Harvard or MIT online and had stellar grades, good work/club experience, etc.

Agree completely. I think some people forget the marketplace is a game of inches, if not centimeters.

Candidate 1: Begins accumulating college credits at 17. Takes unpaid internships at 18 while taking online classes from Harvard or MIT. Has a GPA measured against several thousand online global students, which isn't prone to grade inflation. Completes a formal capstone year at a brick-and-mortar uni by 21. Then formally enters the workforce at 22 with industry contacts, honed professional skills, and solid understanding of the real world.

Candidate 2: Enters a target school at 18. Gets a respectable 3.5 GPA from while accumulating a few summer internships. Relies OCR for job leads.

Which candidate do you take? Who adds value from Day 1?
