Monkey Business
Hello, I'm a sophomore undergraduate and I just finished reading Monkey Business by Peter Troob and John Wolfe. All in all, it was a really good book, I tore through it very quickly and actually laughed out loud a few of the times (table at the christmas party.)
For those who haven't read it, it's about two B school grads (Wharton and Harvard) who got entered the world of investment banking (as associates with DLJ) with grand visions of advising captains of industry on billion dollar deals, going to parties at Long Island or Greenwich mansions, and spending their high incomes on a fantastic lifestyle. However, the bleak reality of 100+ hour weeks, road trips, and cruel superiors drained these two young men of happiness and neither stayed longer than 3 years.
I'm curious to know, how similar is their foray into Wall Street to the typical investment banker's experience? I expect it to be about the same, but I'm curious to know what people with real experience in the field have to say.
Read other threads on WSO, but I think most people would agree those days of banking are long gone. Relative comp (adjusted for inflation etc.) isn't as great and the IBD life style is more "corporate" now (more chess team than locker room - although degree of change varies from bank to bank).
The Gist of Books Like Monkey Business (was Damn, It Feels Good to Be a Banker)? (Originally Posted: 06/14/2013)
I haven't found any interview or one hour lecture on YouTube (Like an @Google talk) of the authors of Monkey Business. The author of DIFGTBAB is anonymous, so I won't find it as well.
1st, I am not that much into this yet to want to read books by - to me - unknown folks. Heck, I have other interests and things to do with my time as well.
I don't want to pay for the abstract as well (You know about the site GetAbstract? You can read there Monkey Business in short form.)
However I would be more than happy to watch an honest one hour lecture on the subject on YouTube or spend one hour reading a thorough article on the subject to start with.
Where to go?
Edit: OK, then stick with the Money Business route if DIFGTBAB is not serious enough.
The author of DIFGTBAB is not anonymous.
Use Google.
Not to mention the book is basically his blog put into a different format. Still funny though.
It sounds like you're just starting to explore the world of IB. Even ff you're not sure whether you have finance interest, Monkey Business is still a good investment. It's funny, entertaining, and easy to read.
As Heister said, you can read DIFGTBAB in blog format at leveragedsellout.com
There is not a complete overlap between the LSO site and DIFGTBAB, so I do recommend spending the $12 for the book. Some of the illustrations are very funny... It's a snapshot of an era.
I assume you know this, but realize that Damn It Feels Good to be a Banker and Leveraged Sellout are both pieces of satire. The author is not actually in the financial sector--but again, this should be pretty obvious.
It's not about the monetary investment but the time investment. First I would just read a [longer] article, blog post or watch a YouTube lecture which sells me on the idea exactly like the Monkey Business book. :D
OK, then stick with the Money Business route if DIFGTBAB is not serious enough.
