GS PIA - thoughts?
Long time viewer but first time posting
I'm a second year analyst in a top group at MS/JPM, going through megafund recruiting now. Have several interviews lined up with the traditional suspects but also a random call lined up with a Partner in GS PIA for a potential opening in GS Capital Partners (the traditional buyout PE arm). Anyone have views on GS PIA? Have heard it's a backup for many GS analysts but again not sure.
Anything would be helpful - culture, hours, b school placement, etc. I don't work at GS and don't have many connections there (other than the person who helped me set up this call) so very difficult to get the inside scoop on this. Thanks in advance
Work at a bank, get paid like a banker
When was the last time you heard GS PIA running a deal? Obviously, this is a first class problem, but I would choose many other funds over GS PIA if there was a choice.
If you have megafund interviews or top MM interviews there's no need to pursue PIA.
Heard from a buddy who worked there that's its a complete sweatshop with hours worse than banking. Probably a great "preftigious" experience though learning wise, if you're willing to suck it up for a couple years. That's all I know.
Thoughts on GS Principal Investing Area (Originally Posted: 12/12/2015)
Now I've heard that they act as a PE group but was wondering if it would be a good place to start to get in a Carlyle, Blackstone, etc.
Lots of deals in the pipeline, analysts rotate between private credit and equity, have a v good relationship with LevFin which feeds them unlike other funds who do not have this advantage, v solid team with smart people.
How big of a group is it? I know it isn't the bread and butter of GS but it really does seem like a great group.

GS Principal Investment Area (Originally Posted: 01/14/2011)
Hi there,
I applied to GS London for the SA program and have been called to interview for IBD and for their Principal Investment Area team (even though I only applied to IBD).
Would anyone be able to give me an idea of what PIA interviews look like? Since it's PE, will there be a case study, and given that I have previous SA experience can I expect questions on past transactions? Any other color on them or thoughts on how they're perceived would be greatly appreciated.
Edit: Been through the search and there's not a great deal of useful info there, if any
