Cry me a river. Affirmative Action is the closet thing to reparations that blacks in this country will ever get. I, as a black man, will take every advantage of it. All of the top private schools (Harvard, Yale, Stanford, etc) practice it, and they are still the best schools in the world. It's not like these schools are admitting just any black kid. Besides, statistically, 72% of black students go to high poverty/ under-performing schools, the same cannot be said about Asian or white students. Personally, I think AA is only bad when you let in a person based on race and they drop out of the school. If I were you I would be happy that my race isn't stereotyped as being trouble makers and/or violent thugs.

I am against AA because from what I have personally seen, the blacks at HYP come from families with f500 board members, the JAck and Jill set, etc. They are not the 1%. They are the 1% of the 1%. Also, the SEO kids I have met are blue-eyed cubans and white mexicans who grew up getting polo ponies for their birthdays.
AA is a racket to help the upper middle class and upper class blacks and hispanics.
HOWEVER, the blacks have a special case. They were uncommonly and unmercifully fucked by America for 400 years. Perhaps AA is the closest thing they will ever get to reparations. In that sense, if there HAS to be AA, I say it should be open to american blacks.
But why should it be open to blacks from the Caribbean? Or Hispanics of any kind? If you came over here voluntarily, you deal with what you get. If you were dragged over in chains, that's a different story.

It is foolish to call it evil or good because it (the practice of generalizing based on similarity) is inherently human. Maybe you as a white non pedigreed student have a lot in common with the black american male who never thought he had a chance at college.
Maybe a little bit... but then again, the minority on the same exact level as me was in a better position just because... Affirmative Action really hits home for me because I've always wanted to go to UMich and back then, Affirmative Action was quite the debate. I saw the stats of some non-minorities that got rejected vs. minorities that got accepted, and it pissed me the f off... Some of the differences were enough for it to actually be noticeable that this kid got in based off of his race. I don't care that some people can get a benefit of the doubt when it comes to admissions... but if there's a rich ass minority with the same stats as me (mid-lower class white kid), the minority gets the thumbs up because apparently HE'S at a disadvantage. Give the advantage to the kids with less money if you're going to use the whole "disadvantage" thing to defend AA... Of course, some places defend AA with diversity, so that's different.

It's not as much a race issue as it is a culture issue. This "thug" culture (typically embraced by minorities) does nothing but give those minorities a bad name and image. I'm not sure how we should go about eliminating the "glamour" (not sure I'd call it that) of the lifestyle but it needs to be taken care of.
Earlier this year I was jumped by five or six male minorities (not blacks but similar to the thugs in these videos) for no other reason than I was white. They didn't take anything from me and did nothing but yell racial slurs at me as they beat the living hell out of me. Being held down and having my head stomped repeatedly was definitely a memory I'll take with me to the grave. Ended up in the hospital with my cheekbone cracked in 3 places, a broken rib, and a few other cuts and bruises. 3 metal plates in my face and 24 stitches later, I can say I have a healthy hatred of this "thug" culture. Any culture that glorifies violently assaulting other people for no reason (I was simply walking home), is not contributing to society.
I'm not sure who's to blame for this "thug" culture, but I know this, if I were to witness this sort of thing happening to someone else, they sure as hell wouldn't be walking away from it, regardless of what races are involved.

Hawaii. Little do most people know but it's one of the few places in America where whites can experience reverse-racism. They even have a word (haole) for white people and use it similar to the N word. Nope, wasn't expecting anything and got sucker punched to start it. I was literally right down the street from my apartment. The group was walking down the sidewalk the opposite way, I didn't think anything of it at the time (figured they were just walking somewhere), and just stepped to the side to let them pass. The biggest guy acted like they were just going to pass me, then grabbed me, kneed me in the groin, punched me in the stomach, then threw me down, where the others pinned me before I could get back up. Next thing I knew I was gettin kicked in the ribs and face, and then stomped on a few times. Then as soon as it started they were gone. I lost sight in my right eye for about 15 minutes but it returned by the time the police came. Didn't even realize my cheekbone had been shattered until the cop told me it was and he touched it and I could feel the bones moving haha.
It was a shitty recovery (couldn't eat solids for about 2-3 weeks) but the upside was that the nurses I got were pretty good looking.
Oh, and I've used it as a story in a few interviews and it seems to help haha

Nope, it was a pretty decent street I lived on. It was just a street away from a high school with a police "substation" built into it. Still took them a long time to respond though. I think these guys just went out looking for trouble and found me to start it.

Let me just say something - i DON'T believe in affirmative action. We should be looking at individuals, not race. AA is inherently racist. BUT someone said what advantage does a poor asian have over a poor black and the answer is a SHITTON. When I see an asian acting "thug," I'm much more disgusted than when I see a black person acting the same way. And it's because you have to think--what are the chances that they were raised to value education, etc.? I come from an extremely poor asian family (mom didn't work, 4 siblings, dad came here when he was 40, was cook at restaurant for most of his life before he got an IT job and worked his way up). But I had a huge leg up on most poor blacks. Because my dad had taught me calculus by the time I was in 7th grade, and they forced me to read books when I was a kid. They made me play sports, too, and used all their savings to make me learn piano and swimming (for first 15 years of my life, I never saw them buy anything purely for themselves. Only things for me/my siblings. While I know black parents who have never bought their kids a birthday/christmas present, and spend money on stuff for themselves). Now, if there's a black kid who came from his underpriveleged background, and he scored say, 100-200 points lower than me on the SATs, and had similar ECs, I would say he should probably get into a school over me, because he managed to do stuff on the same tier as me against much harder odds. Now, the thing is, i don't think this is common and i think it's identifiable at an individual basis--which is why im against AA. But to just say that any black kid can just work hard if he wants to is complete bs. You may think that hard work and education are these oh so great values. Well, whether you like it or not, fact is that you value those things because of the culture you grew up in. Do you really think it's inherently in black people to be this way? If we took all the black kids and made rich white parents raise them, you think they wouldn't all start doing much better in school? If so, then it's not a black problem. But it's not solvable by some stupid welfare state or AA either. You have to change the fundamental morality and value system of an entire community. That's hard. And I'm not really smart enough/care enough to try to solve the problem but I hope people cleverer than I are working on it.
The problem is the government can't change the fundamental morality and value system of any community. Ideally you need the parents...or should I say parent...to instill these values at a young age and/or you have to have people that can relate to that particular community, who've 'made it', go back and show the kids that there are options other than being a professional athlete or rapper...but that you have to do certain things they will have to do, like show up for school and study, etc. Sadly the government doesn't realize this and they continue to fund the complacency creator known as welfare.
