Is it too late to find an internship now?
I've been trying to look for internships all Spring but nothing has helped. Is there still a chance? And if so, what should I pursue? I'm a rising junior at a target with a 3.7 GPA and previous internships but none in the finance industry.
You have a 3.7 from a target, with previous experience (even if it isn't directly finance related, you can still spin it to make it sound relevant, unless it's something completely random - your tag says asset management, which is easy to spin) and you can't get any interviews whatsoever? Or have you gotten interviews and were unable to convert them?
I got two phone interviews but didn't hear back from them after that
In that case, you should probably work on your interviewing skills. Have you networked at all?
Never too late. Just do whatever you can - reach out to family friends and friends of your parents, network by cold emailing alumni, cold call boutiques, apply to everything you are interested in on Indeed / Glassdoor / etc.
I got my internship after Sophomore year around this time, just keep at it and something will work itself out.
Does applying online still help? I thought most companies would be filled up by now.
Tiny / boutique firms might still be hiring randomly, you never know. I got my internship through a posting on some career site and it turned out to be a great experience.
Just gotta get on the grind. Call every boutique AM/PE/IB shop in your area or the area you'd like to work in. Odds are someone is still looking for an intern.
dasffdaw
forget about applying online.
your best bet is to reach out to the most senior possible at small hedge funds/ PE/ VC funds. be aggressive and show some balls - senior people love that, esp at hedge funds regardless of size. if you decide to take the hedge fund route have 2-3 detailed/ contrarian trade ideas ready. help a seed stage VC fund source a deal. do something creative and you will stand out.
I'm in a similar boat. I've gotten a PWM internship for this summer (also a rising junior) but it's part time so I'm looking to do something in addition to it. I've gotten mine by randomly cold emailing people and I've only gotten it a couple of weeks ago so I think it's definitely possible.
It's not too late, start cold calling. I was able to get an internship at a fairly decent buyside shop coming from a non target state school by hitting the pavement. It helps if you can send them materials like reports or models. I got this internship less than 3 weeks ago. Though, a caution: don't burn some bridges trying to get this internship (don't pester old contacts you can use next year).
Hit the pavement, slide resumes under doors or go to the place yourself if it's in the city (that's how I got my internship).

Hi Guys,
I'm a sophomore at a Semi Target(Top 5 undergrad B School) and I'm working some small part time positions this summer. I will have a 3.2 gpa going into junior year recruiting.
Is it too late to get something for this summer? I was wondering how to go about finding international opportunities and if that was still an option? Do I stand a chance for recruiting next year? What can I do to get a sweet offer for next summer?
Thanks, MacroMonkey
Span your net wide, try for as much no-name boutiques as well as related positions (corp fin, f500, anything that you can spin into sounding relevant).
With 3.5 GPA cut off, going through traditional means of application process won't be that useful; I would say mainly focus on networking and getting some connections. Prep your interview with WSO interview guide and kill the interviews. Other than that, like silverrace said, spread your net as wide as possible including small boutiques to BB and EB.
don't give up ! ! Try to meet as many people as possible from the companies that you want to work in .. there could be a spot that needs to be filled somewhere ..
Not at all. Contact alumni or any family connections you have.
Also, I don't think any school with a top 5 undergrad business school is a semi-target.
Ross/Haas/McIntire/McDonough all targets?
Start scouring LinkedIn. Small firms will be your best bet, but try to get something relevant before the end of June. Is career services helpful at your school?
I am sending emails to alumni telling them about my experience and asking for some help.

I just finished my freshman year at a semi-target liberal arts college with a 3.88 gpa and decent ECs. Anyone have any advice on how I could manage to get a PWM internship this late? I haven't really networked much, and I'm assuming if I started now, I wouldn't really get anywhere in terms of getting an internship this summer
PWM internships are do able. They always need kids to put stamps on letters.
It might not be too late. Just cold call/email absolutely everywhere in the vicinity of where you'll be living, and hopefully you'll get some responses. In my experience, mentioning somewhere in the email that you are seeking an unpaid position helped with the response rate.
When you say cold email, you mean literally just cold email anyone at a pwm firm? Even if I have no connection whatsoever?
I'll be finishing high school in about a month and I really have no relevant work experience or volunteer experiences with finance. I really want to have a productive summer, and try to nab a pwm internship. I'm really new to cold-emailing, so what should I write about? (I live in Toronto, Canada). Thanks in advance.
Yes, you do not need any connection just cold email any PWM firm within reasonable distance. A quick google search should yield dozens. Just call or email the branch manager and ask if they could use an unpaid intern this summer and attach your resume.
Be warned though, all your going to be doing is cold call and administrative bullshit. Not to say you shouldn't do it, because its a good starting point on your resume, but the work sucks and its unpaid.
And by sending out my résumé to a bunch of firms, that won't create some sort of aleksey vayner situation??
O
Good luck
Sorry, but both of you just need to use the search function. These topics have been discussed ad naseum on this site. Check out mergers and inquisitions and just search "unpaid PWM internship" "Cold email template" on this site and you will find plenty of info

I am kind of confused on the recruiting cycle this year, I realize that they are starting very early. Is it too late for me to reach out? Are all these applications closing in early August for the early recruitment, or are they trying to wrap it up for the cycle even before college starts?
You are the tiniest bit late if only because people have already started networking since the beginning of the year. But no worries, a lot of the accelerated offers are for either diversity candidates or top candidates. On one hand, normal superdays are going to be competitive because there are less spots open but on the other hand, a lot of the top-notch candidates were put into direct competition with each other already and won't be at your potential superday. I have no hard numbers for you but there are guaranteed still open spots in each BB's summer analyst class, you're just going to have to hustle to get them. Expect banks to wrap up the recruiting cycle by end of August and have their analyst class completely filled out by late November / early December.
That being said, I would still recommend applying early because many applications are on a rolling basis and start reaching out to people as soon as possible. Establishing a network of contacts takes time and there's a lot of resources on how to best do that here and on other sites.
TLDR: It's never too late, it only gets harder the more time goes by.
Too late for internship this summer/ will it hurt me? (Originally Posted: 04/19/2011)
I am a freshman currently studying abroad. I have had the opportunity to work at Barclays PLC in London for the past 6 weeks in their group finance division. While this has been really rewarding I have been looking for work for this summer back in DC where I am from.
At this point I have not contacted any firms. I have been looking into some regional boutiques but is it too late for this? And how should I approach this, just say I am looking for a 6 week internship unpaid to get some experience?
Also I have looked through Barclays directories and such and have come across the HR directors for campus recruiting and some directors in departments I am interested in at Bar Cap in DC. Is it too late to send out emails to see if I can get a 6 week thing in DC this summer?
Is it better to email the analyst/ director at Bar Cap in DC or the campus recruiter? and how should I approach it?
Need help ASAP please, also will it hurt me not having an internship this summer?
honestly i think it is too late but that doesn't mean don't contact barcap. definitely make the effort.
Why are you so focused on doing a 6 week internship only? Also, it's not necessarily too late for smaller boutiques, but it's getting there. I would start cold emailing and calling immediately.
well I am taking a summer class so i don't think it can be the whole summer?
It will not hurt to talk to them. You are a freshman, you will not be hurt by not having an internship. Make the effort, network with them and if you are unable to work something out stay in contact with them for next summer.
Okay so heres what I understand.
It wont hurt me to network and try and get at these firms. I was udner the impression they would turn me down and then not want me in the future, this is not the case though. I guess it cant hurt to start early and if I dont get it I will just pursue it again next year.
It is pretty late in the season so I shouldn't get my hopes too high.
IT wont hurt me to not have an internship this summer. Worst case I just caddy and take a summer class and tey and get something at boutiqe or BB soph. year.
is this accurate, thanks for the help
Also when looking for this internship, should I email through the career designated email or try ot contact the some of the directors and higer up employees to try and get an internship?
careers/hr email is useless, always look for bankers.
best bet is to email a banker who went to your school or your school's graduate programs of any kind.
I am talking about for MMs/ Boutiques-- all of them have the option to submit a cover letter and resume via a career information email adress, however...you are saying I should not do this and try and contact the director directly?
yes--networking should be done with the employees who actually make the decisions in the bank. networking with hr is relatively useless. you want to get a dialogue started with the bankers, as they are the ones who ultimately will interview you and make the decision whether or not to hire you. HR really can't help at all in this instance.

No, you aren't. I don't know what geography you're in but lots of boutiques in Europe hire interns on a rolling basis (even now for June/July). If you're based in Europe or have VISA clearance to work in Europe PM me and I can help. Also, specify what sector.

Im beginning to wonder how soon my window is going to close and im left without anything. Anybody have any last minute success stories out there?
from experience, no it is not too late.
Ya you definitely have time left...I just secured an interview the other day with a good chance of converting it to an offer so don't freak out yet. Theres still a month of time left.
landed mine in june so don't worry. Though you shouldn't expect the internship to be anything amazing - in my experience boutiques hiring this late don't have as much dealflow
Nah dude I got an internship in May last year. Keep going.
I got a paid one last week from cold calling. I had two interviews scheduled for other unpaid ones. I am not n a top 3 city
Also at this point, don't bother cold emailing much. Boutiques r small so it is easy to get them on the phone
so your just calling these banks? What number are you calling, the MDs?
just calling the main office. most of the offices are less than 20-30 people. What city are you in?
It's definitely not too late. I recently got few offers and contacted firms by cold calling/cold emailing 2 weeks ago. I would try that if I were you. Good luck
My strategy so far has been to cold email analysts, but this has lead to limited opportunities because most do not post their emails online only MDs. Have you guys had success directly emailing MDs?
A friend of mine was able to secure an interview with a boutique by emailing an MD at the office; however, the alum happens to be an alum of our university so he certainly had an advantage there.
Especially at boutiques, MDs are probably going to be at the decision making level when it comes to interns, so getting in good with them will directly help you when it comes down to it.
how do you guys find which boutiques to go after?
Google/LinkedIn.
I'd either Google "investment management firms city"
Go through Alumni on LinkedIn, check out the company website, and if it sounded like a cool place I'd shoot them an e-mail.
I'd also Google specifics like "Managing Director University of Non-Targets" or "Portfolio Manager University of Non-Targets" to see if I could get anyone who wasn't showing up on LinkedIn.
It's never too late to offer your vitality and hard work to someone trying to pad their P&L. Just make sure you know what you're getting OUT of the internship -- a lot of these unpaid gigs are suspect, at best.
Keep trying, its never too late. Look for alumni from college and high school. I've learned that oftentimes, high school alum help a lot more than college alum just cause less people reach out to them.

Any suggestions to mitigate applying late while still trying to get a spot at a good firm? Coming from a non-target but have a good gpa and was a professional athlete - SVP I spoke with today said my resume was fantastic so hoping that counts for something
It's late in the game for BB/EB and most MM shops. You should reach out to boutiques now. You don't enjoy the luxury of building relationships at the moment. Cold email firms and be direct.
Thanks for the reply - that's seems like my best option. Polishing my technical skills this week and going to start calling at the end of the week/early next week.
Trading internships - Is it too late? (Originally Posted: 12/16/2015)
First off, if I'm being ridiculous and I have no chance, please tell me.
I'm a junior studying economics at a non-target. I've been reading about trading and talking to some traders about their job and I've decided I would like to do it as a career. It suits me because I'm willing to put in the time and hours and I'm a very mathematical thinker. However it's very late in the recruiting season for trading. In addition, I actually know very little about actual trading and would be totally unprepared to answer technical questions. I have very little experience in programming and a minor in math. I've toyed with the idea of spending the next few weeks doing nothing but learning everything I possibly can about trading to prepare for interviews, and then cold-calling firms to get a summer internship. Is that reasonable?
Alternatively I've thought about doing something else in finance this summer and then spending the next semester or two learning and practicing trading in my spare time, then applying for a full-time trading position after graduating. Is this reasonable?
Finally I've considered learning as much as I possibly can about trading this semester, and then spending the entire summer trading my own money. And then after that I'll show my trading record to trading firms and apply for a full time position. Is this reasonable?
Again, if I have no chance please tell me. If I have a chance of succeeding but also a chance of failing and ending with nothing, tell me that too.
Thanks.
I am in the same boat.
Where are you located?
Los Angeles
Usage of the term 'trading' is too damn high in your passage. (But anyway...)
The math and programming are not common among all forms of trading. (Desk quants, Prop/algo trading, quant strats) => math/programming (Old school forms of trading) => sales skills, maybe some excel, etc. You should spend some time exploring the field and see which one matches your skills and liking.

PWM Internship - Am I too late? (Originally Posted: 01/02/2012)
I'm a freshman looking for a PWM internship in the summer at a BB bank branch in my area. I was wondering who I should be trying to contact: the branch manager or someone lower? Am I too late? Thanks
Google "wealth management (city)" and look at the local results. Most will have a phone number. Call them. Explain to them your situation. The end.
If you have the option of talking to a branch manager definitely do that.
Call the main number and ask about internships, or e-mail the branch manager
I got my PWM internship by emailing the financial advisors since I got no response from the branch manager. Good luck!
I got my internship by contacting both advisors and branch managers. Like tryharder, the only response came from one of the companies financial advisors. It shouldn't be too hard, just keep at it.
Did you just if internships are available or did you try and develop a relationship first? Thanks.
I just asked if internships were available, but I was looking for fall semester internships (and it was September already). Might not be a bad idea to develop a relationship and then ask about internships in March or something
I was looking for a summer internship and I just asked if internships were available. Sent out a ton of cold emails.
How did that work out for you?
I got 4 responses to interview and ultimately interviewed with 2 financial advisors at different branches. PM me if you have other questions about the internship.
Mostly they will give out these internships if you call at the right time... so just call..
PWM internship can be landed in several ways. Students that post PWM internship reviews on InternshipKing.com mostly say: (1) Call the most senior person at the brand or (2) Contact a financial advisor you know. Internships in PWM are common and not that hard to come by. Do not wait until an internship is posted as your chances will significantly decrease.
If your school will give you credit for an internship and you are looking to learn more about PWM/have it on your resume (unpaid), then shoot me a msg.
My team could use an intern.
It is pretty funny to hear about the intern experience in PWM. Most teams give their interns cold calling responsibilities, which would be a huge turn off if I was a young kid looking at possible job opportunities. PWM is actually a great career path, but only if you land on a large team. $2-3MM+ in revenue.
Truth is prospecting is a big and important part of the internship. My first internship was (unpaid) for school credit and I was lucky enough to be working with a team that had over $1.4B under management. As an intern without any licenses you are pretty much limited to prospecting, client presentations, and any type of research and analysis around the markets and portfolios.

Hi,
I am new here. Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I went through some final interviews for some OCR banks but unfortunately did not receive an offer. I am looking now for MMs and boutiques.
I am wondering though - is it too late to try emailing/applying for internships for these banks for the upcoming summer? These places do not have anyone registered on my school's alumni network. I was considering sending mass emails to different banks this upcoming week asking if I could speak with members of their firm regarding a possible internship opportunity. I know many on this site have been posting about offers they have already received from MMs. I understand it is difficult/impossible to get interviews without networking in banking (consulting may be easier).
I am basically wondering if it is still possible to go for a banking internship (as a junior) or if it is near impossible now in terms of the timeline.
I'm starting to freak out a little but I am hoping things will be fine. Thanks for your time.
I think the elite boutiques are done recruiting, but there are definitely some MM and boutiques hiring
^so it's possible. I have been freaking out...
I'm in the same boat as you -- zero offers. The light is fading quickly but it's not dark yet -- keep at it.
cold call, quit freaking out. Plenty of smaller firms, but call them, don't just send in your resume.
Look at boutiques.
Don't freak out, you still have a chance. Start pounding the pavement.
Thanks guys. I'll be mass emailing a bunch of boutique career email addresses this coming week asking about internships and possibly speaking with people at the firm. My school's alumni network has nobody at these banks.

I have not yet heard back from any of them. Does anyone know what the situation might be? Like if selections have already been made and I just wasn't selected, or if they have yet to make selections, etc.
Assuming I do not land an internship for next summer, does anyone have any advice for the best resume-building way to spend the summer before my senior year? My post-graduation goal is to get into Corp Fin at a F500.
Thanks!
May I suggest networking? Most internship recruiting is done during the winter and spring, with prime time being from now through March, I'd start sending out requests for informational interviews.
From my experience most recruiting is done during the Fall months of September-November. With that being said there is still plenty of time to find internships within the F500+. Since it seems you go to a non-target you need to start networking and getting after it.
Best of luck.

I was initially planning on tech corporate finance as a backup, but the accounting focused nature of the work seems pretty boring and I am considering IB instead. I have a 4.0 with a finance major and a couple clubs but no leadership positions. I also have a unique F100 internship doing startup consulting that I have been working at since last summer and have a return offer from. Do I have a chance at a MM or paid boutique internship by just applying online without any networking? Am I too late? Are there any you would recommend I apply to?
It will be a shot in the dark without networking this late in the game. I actually got my junior internship through a connection of my professor's. If you have a finance professor that likes you enough you could approach them about something (I am from a non-target and dedicated professors have really fought for me and a few other students). If you don't find anything related, then get a leadership position in clubs and prepare to network like crazy senior year. Corp fin really isn't that bad and gives you transferable skills. Definitely still push apps in online. You never know.
Definitely going to work my way into some leadership positions and hopefully beef my resume up a little bit. Hoping I have a chance at a decent bank if consulting doesn't pan out for this summer.
This year things are a little odd because banks recruited very early.. until last year you would be on normal time. One thing to keep in mind is that some schools, Penn for example, have not let banks jump the gun on recruiting, so there are still spots out there.
Also, I'm sure there are spots for much smaller places and small funds... You'd be at a place that you wouldn't want the return offer from, but nothing beats experience, which you'd get.

It's not too late, most places do interviews until early December, some even until January
This is what I thought, but as banks receive thousands of applications, I thought that the probability to be invited gets smaller if you apply in november
basically over with few exceptions
It's the middle of the process now. EB and BB doing interviews, etc. It's late unless at target or with good network.
Is it too late no, but if you have not received any return communication from a bank then I would say yes.....

I've got a good plan for this summer that will hopefully be impressive, but will firms be understanding of my switch from looking for Engineering jobs to i-banking jobs?
My Econ GPA is about 3.7 but overall is about 3.4. Will the Econ one overshadow the cumulative, or will this look bad? I plan on putting both on my resume (I think putting Econ only can look fishy).
I'm in a selective program where if I graduate with a 3.0 or higher I get admission into the Kellogg School for an MBA after 3 years of work experience. Should I emphasize this when I apply?
put the program in your cover letter. your gpa is good enough to get into ibanking, but most of the big names are finished with recruiting.
Thanks. Yeah, I'm talking about preparing well for next year.
Doesnt hurt to mention it, but shouldnt stress it

How about finance internships, not just investment banking?
Your best bet is to start using your contacts or start calling smaller Banks. I'm sure there might still be some finance internships out there but you'll have to dig deep.
You may have missed the mark completely.
Contact your career services officer.
you are too late
If you have it in you, you'll tap the career services center, your alumni network, and start sending emails/calls to the MM and Boutique banks. What does your resume look like? I mean what's on it? Don't just describe it (ex: a sheet of paper with text). What have you learned through the recruiting process so far? Any weaknesses or tips you've picked up in the recruiting process?

It might be too late for BB formal recruiting, by networking and informal meetings and requesting to work for free if you have to can still get you an internship until may.
Be aggressive. Call AND Email. It sucks because you have to put in so much more time to get an interview than you do with on campus recruiting, but what are the other options, right? good luck
Yes.
As alpha said, you can certainly still get an internship, it just won't be glamorous and probably won't be with a BB now. Calling alumni and cold calling small firms and local firms should be best - I'd wave that chicago mfe around too when calling
Thanks for the input guys. The point hurts me most is I am not a resident. Probably looking for opportunities back in my hometown.

I know some well-known/respected (even by WSO's warped prestige standards) MM banks that have only JUST started to look at resumes, so it's not too late in the process just yet.
On a MUCH more important note, if you're just another undergrad still trying to break in, then change your fucking work status on you profile. You're NOT a current IB analyst like your profile says, so you SHOULD NOT indicate that you are (because other desperate undergrads are going to take your advice seriously).
I would try contacting middle market and boutique banking recruiters on Linkedin. Good luck.

Hey Fuckmouth, change your work status. Try for MMs and unknown boutiques. Doesn't matter because FT is a different ballgame.

A few small banks have said it is too early in the process for them to really think about summer interns yet, while other banks have told me that they already filled up the 1 or 2 intern spots...
What does WSO think, too early or too late for boutiques?
It's probably way too early, relax. It's not even 2012 yet.
Maybe this is school-dependent, because where I'm at the deadline hasn't passed for a single 2012 SA.
its way too early. BBs have just started their summer 2012 recruiting in Jan and boutiques generally recruit after.

Ask Barney Stinson, maybe he'll let you intern at his bank.
I'm pretty sure it's too late. I know people with offers from S&T already. At my school, BB recruiting is over. Today was the superday for a few different divisions at various banks (at my target). Today was also the superday for non-target Investment Banking kids at Barclays and it was one of the late ones. Not sure if S&T recruiting is also over but I would assume it is. If you have any contacts, I would try to leverage them now because, if it's not too late, it soon will be.
Yeah, I am from a target school and all BBs have finished SA recruiting including conducting superdays. Also regarding post by Olman, I attended a few S&T interviews and so most BBs have finished S&T recruitment as well.
Too late for nyc sa applications? (Originally Posted: 01/15/2013)
I have been preparing to apply for a lot of NYC SA positions. However I read the NYC SA recruiting thread yesterday and became worried. Is it to late to apply to most firms already?
Why don't you check with your CCD or go on to their websites and find out?
JPM deadline tonight. Get it in by midnight.
You should be able to find out deadlines on your own through OCR or Career Services, every company is different
