Tools of the Trade: Pro Tips
Starting this up to compile best-in-class list of banker tools and pro-tricks:
- Macabacus Dot com -- best online resource for financial modeling (hands down). Most of it probably too advanced for banking, but sets the industry standard
- BamSEC Dot com -- best way to browse filings -- even if you don't pay for it
- Mergers & Inquisitions -- good general investment banking guides and some good PE content as well
- StreetOfWalls Dot com -- good LBO interviewing & practice materials
- LogoIntern Dot com -- best online logo resource (finding and formatting logo slides automatically).
What else belongs on here?

Bamsec saves me hours each month - I hate edgar and Factset is much slower
For the folks at smaller shops without access to proprietary Excel modeling tools. The Turbo Training the Street (TTS) plugin is fairly good for Excel modelling hotkeys / formatting if your firm doesn't provide you with a similar add-in (I'm using it while I wrap up business school).
ConsultingQuant have you used any of the other tools above (logointern, bamsec, etc.) or the macabacus addins?
I haven't babymonkey357 - honestly, should have used logo intern in the past but just didn't know about it. I've generally just used SEC EDGAR for filings, you can also get the same excel download there. The advantage of BAM SEC seems to be the ability to search across company filings, and I honestly just haven't needed that functionality in my prior roles. As far as macabacus add-ins, I think the TTS plugin is probably comparable.
For charts in PPT, I've used the thinkcell plugin as well. It's aggravating in that it seems to suck up processor speed (slow to move around), but relatively intuitive from a user interface perspective for formatting.
What does Logo Intern's pricing look like? That would have been great to have in IB, but I doubt bankers would want to pay for it.
Its free dude. There doesn't seem to be a paid version yet like BamSEC
Awesome. Almost, but not really, makes me wish I was back in banking so that I could use it.
I am a big fan of the macabacus plug-in for Excel - convinced my shop to buy it for me when I first joined, it's relatively inexpensive and saves a ton of time. You can setup your own custom shortcuts and it has an awesome trace precedents/dependents tool (with ability to evaluate functions and groups, and even offsets).
I know two buddies whose shops have actually started buying macabacus pro for all of their associates now.
You use any of the free tools / any free resources to add?
I'm a big fan of the macabacus modeling guides - best quality on the street and free.
Only free tool I use that could be of value to you guys is FINRA's bond price lookup tool. You can use this to lookup bond prices and yields without a Bloomberg terminal (although functionality is very limited). I use this a lot when I'm on the road.

asimplemodel.com is a pretty good start for the most basic modelling stuff... it's a fantastic starter before you dig into macabacus.
It doesn't look free :(
Most videos on the site are free (the only ones that aren't are the quizzes and a select few about deeper modelling stuff which is found on macabacus anyway). It's honestly a great start, I used it because I found macabus quite challenging at first and it worked pretty well in giving me a basic understanding of modelling
I am using FinPricing tool for trading, hedging and risk management. It is free now.

Has anyone noticed how the actual responsibilities of an Analyst doesn't align to what the title "Analyst" suggests?
In reality, tasks that we as Analysts engage in has more to do with finding information in filings, articles, websites, google, and other sources rather than making sense of it through analysis. I am still not convinced that spending 15 laborious hours of going through all 10-Ks (with CTRL+F) is value add for my current project, my employer, or my career.
I've set out on a mission to identify tools that can automate non-value-add functions of my work to concentrate my time on tasks that intrinsically benefit the deal and eventually the company. I am looking for tools that provide bakers with more than commodity data, such as quotes, but actually help me move up the information foodchain. I want to separate my quest into two categories, "Quantitative" and "Qualitative" tools.
Quantitative: Provide either the ease of accessing hard data facts, such as LTM EBITDA, growth of the Book Value of Pref. Equity over LTM, etc.
Quantitative: Provide access, insight, or info on soft stuff, such as non-profit affiliations of the Chairman, or industry groups of all subsidiaries of XYZ Corp.
Smh, apparently most analysts don't even do anal

Any updates to this? Seems like banks are starting to get a little better about analyst efficiency stuff.
Logointern add-in has been a big help. We recently got that installed.
I've heard of groups looking at tombstone offerings, but haven't seen anything myself.

What about all these AI tools that always seem to be just around the corner. Do any actually exist, either inhouse/proprietary to a firm, or made by third parties? And are they any good?

My bank is partnering with some tech company to explore developing some new CRM system for bankers... basically our current CRM is crap and they got it set up ~18 months ago after a hefty review process and everyone hates it.
