Most MDs sit on the trading floor, but there is a chance that they have a office on the floor to work out of as well. Some MDs who are in super upper level management (ie Head of multiple product groups) will probably have a corner office on the floor.

As for the number of traders per MD. Depends on the product group and the bank. I know of one desk that is 10 guys (6 traders, 4 structuring) and 3 are MDs and another 3 are EDs (talk about overhead) and that is just one desk. I also know of another product group that is very lean where you have a Global Head MD, and then 1 MD per desk (and the desks range from 6-12 traders).

There is an MD is charge of Sales and and MD who is the head of research, but from my experience you can have lots of MDs in sales and research. Sales usually work in teams of 2-4 covering a different type of customer so that one person can be gone from the desk and the customer can still receive seamless coverage, but at the end of the day a sales guy has his own clients and he eats what he kills.

"Greed, in all of its forms; greed for life, for money, for love, for knowledge has marked the upward surge of mankind. And greed, you mark my words, will not only save Teldar Paper, but that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA."
