Trading based on institutional investors bets?
Guys, have anybody tried to rely not on technical analysis, but on 13F-HR form filed by institutional investors?
I mean you can build the history of funds' portfolio for long history and pick winners. And then look at what winners chose for next quarter.
?
The issue is the data you get is stale (so you don't know if they've sold it), there's no information listed on shorts (so potential hedges or whether the longs are part of a pairs trade), and you have little visibility to the entry prices. Useful information for sure, but I wouldn't build a strategy around it.
Do not forget that institutional investors operate $ millions and they need time, quarters to enter / exit stock. It's like tanker which has inertia.
Don't these 13F filings also omit derivatives? If so, I can imagine all sorts of issues...
