Equity Research vs Floor Day Trader

Hi all,

I'm currently working as an equity research analyst job from past 1 year,

I have got an offer to become a floor day trader after ofcourse few weeks of training

Another option that I'm thinking of is whether or not to join ANex advantage program which is for $5K and lets one work on live deal for a few weeks

What experience will look best on resume for getting an interview call at the very least?
Its been one month since I have started applying which I believe is not big enough a time to count out my equity analyst experience

Can all the experienced people throw some light on best alternatives given

  1. $5K is not a big problem,
  2. but getting a better job in IB / PE / HF / Equity Research Analyst asap is a priority

Thanks a lot guys,

P.S. Can I really apply for IB positions with ERA work ex?

Yikes. Do a little lurking. Most of those shops that charge you to trade make most of their money by fleecing the little guys and pocketing the cash. Total pyramid scheme. Stay away from there man!

@Monkesama: Thanks for the advice

But you are mistaken by my post, I'm not paying anything to become the floor trader, SMB capital is a reputable firm who has made the offer, so there is no problem on that front,

Now could you throw some light on my main dilemma

Which is the best alternative?

  1. Equity Research 2. Trading or 3. Anex advantage program

Anex advantage program fees is $5K which has 1 week of training and 4-5 weeks of internship with a small PE/HF/IB where you work on part of an actual deal. $5K is paid once the candidate knows which firm he is going to work with.

So If you can give me your perspective on what would look the best?

disagree. ER is being commoditized. being a trader will teach you to think about risk much better than ER. As well, if you really want to run your own shop one day, then you are going to have to really focus on drawdowns. unless you are a superstar, investors are not going to tolerate more than one down month, so learn to manage your risk and mark to market P&L through trading. Also will teach you to be liquid. Read the Balyasny 3Q 2008 letter to investers (you can find it online) and you will realize the big difference a trading mindset makes when it comes to bad times and managing your downside risk.
