Transferable IB networking skill to F1000?

After hearing great advice from WSO folks and considering my personal situation I need to find a job, FO would be nice, but I don't really have the luxurious to pick as time/money is running out.

So, how can I make a good use of what I learned in IB networking to find jobs in F1000 companies so I can stand out among the bottomless pile? I felt informational interview probably wouldn't really work since I am looking for immediate work. Cold call is not really applicable, because there are so many "random" positions I can potentially apply.

I just don't want to be in that bottomless pile, I am thinking cold call managers whose department is having an opening so I can be remembered? Thus increase my chance for an interview. But then what to ask the manager? Wouldn't the manager just tell me to apply online then kthxbye? How did other people found F1000 jobs efficiently?

Cheers!

If you have a list of companies you would like to work for then check their career pages, see if they have any job postings that match your interests/qualifications, call HR express your interest, ask them about the opportunity, be very appreciative about the time/consideration, apply to the position, follow up with the HR person you talked to the next day to thank them again and let them know that you applied.

Obviously this won't be effective with large, global firms... but its important to recognize that it will no longer be an "online application black hole" once you make a personal contact.
