Most unbelievable way to land a job in your field
Okay....location: west coast top 40 non target. I've heard from more than 3 people that... a staff working in one of the university's departments slept her way up (and the position is not that fancy) She also slept with quite a few students. Didn't get the chance to know her name though.
Try unconventional ways to get a job? (Originally Posted: 08/06/2015)
So i'm currently studying finance at a university in Sweden. With my first year finished i'm looking to get a part time job for some valuable work experience as well as networking opportunities. However, I have absolutely no prior work experience in the field of bank or support which makes me somewhat of an unattractive employee.
So with my (very) limited work experience, which could be described as irrelevant, I might have a hard time actually finding something. Due to reasons stated I thought maybe there's still a chance, maybe I could try job hunting in unconventional ways.
First thing that came to mind would be to not take no for an answer. Get up and be outside the office before the first guy gets there and ask if they have a job for me. The answer would in most cases be "No", but if I'm being persistent for about two to three weeks, could there potentially be something to gain (grunt work)? Or could it backfire?
I realize that if I offer to work two weeks for free there is a chance i might get exploited, but personally i wouldn't mind, unless i was thrown into a basement and prevented from picking up the valuable knowledge and experience the surrounding had to offer.
So would this kind of "nagging" (or way of networking) get me some work to do at a fund or bank office, so that i could prove my worth without just being a paper on the desk?
Feedback of any kind is greatly appreciated.
Instead of waiting outside the office asking people as they are trying to get to work if they randomly have a job for you, cold email everyone. Offer up that you'd do an unpaid internship to gain experience and knowledge. That's more likely to get you an 'in' than just saying hey, do you have a job opening?
While cold emailing might be a good idea, i feel like emails can easily be overlooked/ignored while a personal meeting might have more impact assuming they don't pretend you're not there. But am i totally wrong about the potential in asking if they need help, there might just be a huge workload that day? Anyway, thanks for the much appreciated advice.
People will offer you stories where in rare instances they or their friends landed internships by showing up to someone's office uninvited. However, in the vast majority of instances this will backfire. Example, a guy once showed up to my office and lied to security about why he was there (he name dropped and our assistant let him up to our lobby). Assistant called me to the front and when I asked him what he wanted he had a poorly planned pitch and asked for a job. While I acknowkedged the effort/persistence I also recognized that I would not want to hire someone who was so completely unaware of normal social/business norms. I can only imagine what type of stuff that kid would have pulled at golf events or closing dinners. I would advise against it. Warm intros are the best way in (other than traditional recruiting) even if it is a distant connection. Reach out to alum, family, friends etc. be pro active and persistent but don't be THAT guy.
Please don't wait outside their office, either you get rejected horribly or maybe they take you in for an interview as the creepy kid waiting outside. Just Google places you're interested in and cold call them, much easier and a lot less effort.

How to get a job? (Originally Posted: 09/16/2009)
So it seems obvious as to how to get a job. Apply, interview and get an offer. However, its not that simple in the real world. I want to create a list of the different ways to getting a job (getting out your resume, getting an interview, etc).
So far I've managed to apply on Monster (yes the job site), my school recruiting site (still pending on results) and networking. What else are/have you guys done that works? Applying to positions through websites? Cold calling firms? I read in another thread that people were contacting alums through LinkedIn? So we've got...
Are IB/PE/VC/HF jobs posted regularly on Monster or Careerbuilder ?. I usually use:
Doostang LinkedIn efinancialcareers.com Albourne village ventureloop.com School Website
I don't know if applying through the company website is effective. Most times, I doubt anyone even looks at the resumes sent through there.
My advice: if there's a few companies you really want to work for, get in touch with Alumni and talk to them. Ask them intelligent questions about the company and industry overall. If there are no alums that work at a firm you're targeting, try cold calling the firm along with sending an email.
If you have work experience (internship or full time), don't forget to network with former colleagues, they can be a useful resource.
I'll post more ideas as I think of them.

Hello community,
Basic question here but I'm wondering what everyone's job-search grind is? I'm a month out of work and have no solid leads, been applying online and working with 4-5 recruiting firms to get me placed anywhere. My last spot was mid-office finance at one of JP Morgan / Goldman / Morgan Stanley.
any reason you have a phone number as your username?
how about you tell us what you have been doing, your stats, background, etc., and we can help from there.
What is the craziest thing you have ever done to get a job/interview ? (Originally Posted: 08/25/2014)
Somehow I managed to land an opportunity to sell myself to the VP of the Crude Trading dept. at one of the biggest oil producers in Houston. The Executive informed me to mail a physical copy of my Resume/CV to his office. What should I send Him? should I write an outlandish cover letter practically begging for the job? should I tell Him I would work for free (for the first 3 months) ? Should I physically go to the office and drop off the "package" ? Buy him a pack of cigars from like Bud Fox did Gekko ?
Please give me your thoughts, right now I don't have much to lose, I loathe my engineering job and I definitely need this opportunity!
I think you should start by sending him a letter with your resume. Overnight it if you want to get crazy.
I'd send him your cv with a cover letter stating why you would fit well for the job. Gifts would be weird and like you're trying to bribe him (and quite possibly against company policy) and saying you would work for free debases your value. If you want to be crazy drop it at the office and ask the front desk if you could personally hand it to him but I'm not really sure how I'd feel about it if someone did that to me. It could seem ambitious or it could seem weird. Honestly, I'm not sure how I'd feel.
In any case, you get the job based on your skills, experience and how well you sell them in person. Not cigars, not clothes, not flamboyant acts (and I don't mean that in a gay way). Look for third parties you may have in common for referrals. Concentrate on these and being persistent in following up.
