Trying to Make the Move into Asset Management from Investment Consulting..
Hi All,
34 y/o male here. CAIA designation. I've spent the past nine years consulting to institutional clients (mostly Taft-Hartley Pension and H&W Funds).
However, I'm looking for a new challenge, and have been looking at some roles with asset managers in consultant relations, relationship management, and client/institutional portfolio management (i.e. marketing a specific investment strategy) roles.
Recently got pretty far in the process for a consultant relations role, beating out a lot of people already in the role. In the end, it went to someone in the position already.
My thing is.. I only want to work for a manager where I really can stand behind their strategies. Most active managers are mediocre, if not, worse.
Would love to join a private equity firm, but that's an even bigger challenge.
Few questions:
- Any advice? I've seemed to put forward a pretty compelling story for why I'm actually better than people in the role. However, it wasn't compelling enough in the interview process I described above.
- Is my best chance to take a role with a firm I may not be crazy about, get some experience, and then look for that "dream job?"
Thanks so much.
