UBS Power Group and Culture as of 2010 (Originally Posted: 01/17/2010)
I have an interview coming up with UBS IBD (NY) and am interested in the energy industry. However, I am not interested in working in Texas. Questions:
1) I've heard there is a power group at UBS NY, does anyone know anything about their recent deals or more information about what they do? 2) Where can I get a quick summary of what happened to UBS in the past few years? I know they've been hit, but if asked how they are trying to turn around etc, what can I say/where to find this information? 3) What is the culture like at UBS as of now? I assume it changed somewhat since a few years ago. 4) I am an engineering major, got this interview through referral/connections - I honestly never have taken a finance course so I don't know anything about valuation. I plan on using the WSO tech guide - will this be sufficient or will they really go into detail?
UBS was probably one of the worst hit banks by the whole toxic-assets debacle, and I believe has still yet to post a profit since. By contrast, it's Asia business is absolutely killing everyone else in ECM and continues to be a strong franchise.
Don't worry about the finance stuff. Honestly, unless you majored in finance, all the stuff that some kids "know" are superficial anyway. Just pick up Vault Guide for Finance interviews and read those 40-50 pages and you'll be fine. Know the basic (what an Ibank does, 3 statements, DCF basics), essentially to show that you have enough of an interest to know what you're talking about. Otherwise, you're an engineering major, and people should realize that you probably have the intellectual horsepower to handle the work. You just have to prove that you're really interested.
Have you made any major decisions/researched anything yourself/used common sense in the last 4 weeks without making a WSO thread about it?

Geez ... 1. You got your interview through referrals/connections. Why not ask them about that? 2. Search the wsj/FT website for UBS and see what comes up. 3. See #1 4. See one of the other 200 threads you've made on preparing for interviews
Can we just start limiting threads by women accounts to 1 per month and up to 5 posts per year? They can pay 1 dollar per new thread and post if they want to go over the limit. Will help bring in revenue.
I also interviewed with UBS and got to meet several members of the Power group (NYC office). The culture in the group is FAR different and much better than other groups. For example, Healthcare culture is tough because of the high turnover. They said hours in the group were far less than others, deal flow seemed comparable, and guys were laid back. Your engineering background will be very helpful since it is tough to understand the technical aspect of the power industry.
Any idea how the culture is in their M&A groups?
