UK MFin or US MBA for a minor change in career?
Hi All, I am looking to apply for B-School 2017 admission, and am thinking to go for MFin or MBA. I would only apply for 5-7 schools and so I would only apply for either MFin or MBA, but not both. So I would like to hear some of your advice on which programs I should target.
-From Hong Kong, undergrad from a target school in Hong Kong
-Graduated with 1st class majoring in finance (I also took quantitative classes which makes me eligible for MFE as well, but my quant grades are not impressive)
2 years WE
-1st job was sales in a BB in the Hong Kong office, worked for about 1 year
-Now in a Hong Kong-based HF, which is small but is top performing in our category. Main job is Chinese equity research. Already managing a small portfolio as well (full discretion under some risk restrictions)
GMAT: 740
My goal after B-School
-work in another location, any major financial center is fine - NY, LN, Tokyo, Singapore, etc. (Actually prefer London)
-get a job in macro or FX/rates trading
I may looking at M7 MBA + some others like NYU/Haas/Yale and some MFin: MIT, LBS, LSE, Oxbridge
By the time I get admitted to B-School, I would have worked for 3.5 years, so I understand why MBA may be more suitable to my stage of career.
However, MBA is much more costly ($$ and time). I am not interested in those general management topics at all.
What I need is a respectable brand and access to recruiters. As for internship, the top 2 programs I target (MIT and LBS) have options for an extra semester and therefore can cater for a summer internship. Therefore, I tend to think an MFin from schools like LSE, LBS, MIT, etc. is good for me.
It would be great if you can give advices on which schools I should target as well.
