UMich Econ or USC Marshall

Hi guys! I was accepted into Marshall at USC and Econ at UMich and I'm having a difficult time choosing between the two. I'm originally from Southern California so I would prefer to go out of state for the experience because I'm a junior level transfer and only have two years left but everyone thinks I'm crazy to pass up the opportunity to be at b-school at USC while I'm in LSA at UMich. I 100% plan on going to grad school and pursing a MBA so what I'm wondering is if it really makes a difference if I go to UMich for Econ for undergrad or would it be better for me to do Bus Admin at Marshall and graduate from there and then attend grad school for a MBA? I'm also considering applying to Ross after my first year in LSA even though I would graduate later. Please help! Thanks!

There's generally never a 'cookie cutter' answer or solution to most problems, so the best I can do is give you my perspective. Here are a few questions that should get you thinking, and above all you need to be realistic (bordering pessimistic) with your answers and assumptions:

1) Why is your current university insufficient? Specifically, you need to have a good reason why you can't meet your current goals there.

2) Where do you want to work after graduation? Your network is very important, and while getting an 'outside perspective' sounds great in theory; eventually you are going to need to leverage your University for recruiting, and you are going to want them where you need them.

3) What is your financial situation? You talk about transferring to a private school that isn't the greatest with student aid and an out-of-state school where you might attend an extra year in order to transfer internally. You're potentially talking about an additional 65k for that extra year (not counting the other two years)... What kind of debt load are you looking at with any of these moves? Would it be more beneficial to save that money and use it toward your MBA down the road?

You need to take charge and be the CEO if your life, so treat this like a business decision. Put together your plan/options and decide which path you would actually invest in and then make the most out of that decision.

"I am that I am"

If you are international its gonna be hard to break into IB/MBB regardless of the school you are going to so you gotta have some backup plans. Marshall would be best for you given you are in the business school there.

Choose UMICH. Econ majors at Umich are not really at much of a disadvantage to the Ross kids. All the econ majors at Umich I know (including my twin brother who now works in IB) got more interviews than they could handle in IB, consulting, AM, etc. On campus recruiting for Ross is not difficult to access as an econ major and almost all of the same companies hold info meetings and post jobs on the general umich board usually requesting finance/econ/related etc.

Even though I am an economics major? I am a rising junior. I forgot to mention that these offers are transfer offers. I used to study in UIUC as an econ student, and I found out that they econ major does not have lots of opportunities.

I personally feel that UM may be a safer bet as a school. you could try Ross and I think you get a 50% chance from LSA. But if you're in LSA you don't get much Ross-exclusive recruiting. Ross or not, U-M has a strong pull towards New York / Chicago.

USC has its advantages too. You could transfer to the nearby berkeley/stanford/UCLA with USC, Marshall itself is a strong b-school too, The bigger advantage is that LA itself is a good city to find internships, have frequent speakers and network with alums or professionals around the area, and if you're international, you better prepare very very early to have internships prior to jobs

I am an transfer student and I am rising junior. So after getting into Umich, Ross is not an option. So right now, I am comparing Marshall and Umich Econ. I know Umich is a great school and have strong alumni around Chicago and NY, but I am not sure about how the econ major help me get into IB.

Question about the opportunities which I will get from umich and usc. I recently did lots of research, including going through each alumni profile from both school who working in IBs. I found that Umich has more people in IBs than USC does. And, those most of Umich people who working in IBs have econ degrees or poly science degree.

Does this mean more IB opportunities in Umich LSA than USC marshall? I need to make decision on next Monday. Hope can get information as much as I can get before that.

Many thanks to WSO community.
