Underage drinking charge not yet expunged

I was caught with a fake ID last month and have a court date for next week. My lawyer is going to to get the charge reduced to underage drinking which I will be able to get expunged after going through ARD. The problem is the expungment process takes a few months so it will be on my record for a while. I am about to graduate and am in the process of applying and interviewing for jobs at investment banks. Will this prevent me from getting hired or will telling them about the charge and that it is going to be expunged help?

BTbanker:

FT recruiting was in January, so a bank that will hire you at this point probably can't afford background checks.

Why did anyone throw monkey shit at this comment...? Maybe it was a little rough, but it's certainly true.

can't comment on IBD, I'm in PWM but had a similar situation but mine was dismissed and I elected to not go with having it expunged. I was honest in my 2nd interview when they were getting ready to do the background check and I was fine. everyone was in college once, as long as you didn't get a DUI, kill anyone (& get caught), or any ridiculous drugs I would think you're ok.

@"thebrofessor" Thanks for the response. I was hoping it wouldn't be too big of a deal because as you said, everyone was in college and most people like to have a little bit of fun. I'm just nervous and really don't want it to have an impact on me getting a job. I wonder if it would be better for me to tell them I had a fake for the sole purpose of tagging along with friends to bars since I am the only one under 21 or if I should just let them think it was just an underage. @"BTbanker" That is just not true as I have a meeting with a prominent bank and they definitely utilize background checks.

depends what the charge was, but I'd be honest no matter what. preface it by saying something like "hindsight being 20/20, this was stupid, but I want to let you know that ____ happened and it will probably come up on my background check." definitely don't say anything until you get to later interviews where they make you an offer or something. every background check has to be signed off on by you, so you'll have an opportunity to tell them ahead of time.

They most likely wont care about this charge as others have stated, but still I would start the expunging process asap just to get it off your record. But I tend to think along the better safe than sorry route

How are you graduating already and aren't even 21...?

I have a DUI that has not been expunged yet, but still succeeded in getting into a top F500 FLDP program.

My process: 1st round interview (on campus) with corp. finance manager – killed the interview and AT THE VERY END (read: I was confident that the rest of the interview had gone well enough that they were interested in hiring me despite a DUI on my record), when the interviewer asked if I had any questions, I asked about the HR/hiring policies about DUI convictions. Two of their corporate policies are Safety and Integrity, so I wanted to address the issue up front.

He did not know, and said he they would like to have me on the team but did not know if this would exclude me. He checked with HR on the phone while I was in the room and told me that, provided I was eventually hired, it would not be an issue as long as I disclosed it on my final contractual application. He then said that since I had already told him, not to bring it up to anyone else except HR if and only if they asked me about it.

Basically you must disclose anything that will show up on your background check. It will not disqualify you for employment, but they will weigh the pros and cons of hiring you with this fact. If something shows up on your background check that you do not disclose on HR documentation, it is usually grounds for immediate termination of the hiring process or firing (if you've already been hired).

If you tell them that you just had the fake to tag along with your friends they will see right through that. That is a terrible idea, an extremely obvious lie, and ding you on the spot.

I have a good friend who got a misdemeanor during his senior year and it didn't impact him at all (he's now doing IBD at a BB). So I wouldn't worry about it. People don't care about the small stuff like underage drinking/open container etc. they just want to make sure you're not absolutely insane and a wanted felon.

Also, even if you plead no contest, it's not a quick turnaround on the expungement (although this may be state by state), but don't you have to at least wait for the probation period to finish before you can apply? Might be worth checking. Best of luck with it though. I wouldn't worry about it all that much, you'll be fine.

The OP never said it was a 'good' bank. If it's true, it's probably a small regional bank. I agree with you that all BB and the more well known boutiques finished hiring for FT a while ago.

Unless you are a felon, most places are fine with "youthful indiscretions" as long as you don't try and hide it and it isn't a pattern.

I appreciate the replies guys. Sounds like its not too big of a deal, which is great. I will still definitely get it expunged though. @"BTbanker" why would I lie on an anonymous board? That does not make any sense and your responses in no way contributed to this discussion. I never said I was going into I banking. And there are ways to get into large banks other than the formal recruiting process. Thanks for all the other replies.
