Urgently need advice for an interview

Hi guys.

I currently intern at a venture capital firm and am in the process of applying to other internships for the end of the year. I only go once a week to my current one, so no conflicts there.

So I've applied to a certain PE firm, and this is one of the heavyweights. I cold emailed the investment manager and sent my resume. Now while I was browsing on the guy's LinkedIn (stalker much haha) I noticed that someone I'm close to in the VC firm is a connection with him. So I emailed him asking if he can put in a good word for me, and he said he would since he knows him really well.

Now that was all yesterday, and early this morning I got an email back from the investment manager saying that the firm doesn't take interns, but he'd love to chat with me over a coffee at their offices and 'offer advice on how to break into private equity'.

I'm sure the friend in VC still hasn't sent the email recommending me, as he would probably do so on Monday morning or something. So what do I do now? Should I arrange the meetup first and then get recommended afterwards? Or is this all fruitless since they're not gonna take interns anyways (and would the recommendation possibly change their stance on interns?)

Thanks!
