Using LinkedIn To Contact A Hiring Manager ? Too Taboo ?

For professional experience jobs (not grad role), would it be a good idea to send an email / LinkedIn message to seniors within departments that I am looking to break in to ?

Theres not many roles up in my niche area at the moment, the few that are available tend to be too senior - & the ones that aren't might be hiring next year, I've finally seen 1 suitable role come up but don't want to miss my chance --- would it be worth maybe emailing / LinkedIn messaging the hiring manager or a senior in that department directly, hopefully it might get me past the recruitment filter ?

Anyone had any success / know of success stories in this ? Or would it come across as weird.

I did get an un-advertised interview in PWM a few years back by reaching out to a senior - wasn't sure if it would work as well for an advertised role. I think I'll give it a try, what's the worst that could happen...

For a small PE shop, how should I structure the message ? I'm thinking

A) Straight up short & concise, no bullsht just ask if there is any jobs coming up in 2 sentences B) Ask for advise on how they got to their position (& just hope I can get an interview out of it) or C) Present myself & explain why I want to work there

Here is my proposed message, would appreciate some feedback;

Hello ______,

I hope you don't mind my messaging you, my names is ______ and I currently work for ______ as an ______ . I recently read/watched/came across [ Insert praise on a recent deal/paper/interview said manager was involved in and why it impressed me ], [ If need be also insert praise here on the company’s performance ]. ______ is an organization that I am hoping to develop a career with, I have very strong [ insert useful skills ] and believe my experience [ enter experience here ] could help add value to your organization. I just wanted to introduce myself to you, should your team be looking to expand in the near future I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to further present myself.

Thank you very much for your time

Best Regards

Ironically, I was actually talking about this with our global head of HR a few weeks ago (I don't remember how it even came up). While our global head of HR admitted that it may be a bit awkward for the candidate, even if the hiring manager does not reply, it leaves a good impression and shows that you really care about the role.

My suggestion would be to send a short email after applying online and then reaching out to two people in the group and mention that you applied and would like to learn more about the group, its work, and the company's culture. Good luck.

I once reached out to a manager on Linkedin, speaking of opportunities.

He responded really well, said there weren't any positions available, but asked to stay in touch.

Little did I know he was the boss of a friend of mine. The manager showed my message to my friend, which led to him saying he knew me.

Small world. Anyways, my friend told me his boss actually really liked me sending a message over linkedin, and that that was one of the purposes of linkedin in the first place.
