UT Austin Econ vs BU vs Others

Hi everyone,
As a high school senior, I'm currently trying to decide which school to attend. I was accepted into UT Austin as an Econ major and Oxford College at Emory U. as an undeclared major. I was also accepted into Boston U, Northeastern, Fordham, UIUC, and Texas A&M as a finance/business. I was planning on doing finance, but UT, where I was rejected by McCombs, is cheaper than most of my other options. Would an Econ degree (with maybe the Econ-MPA or Econ-MBA program?) from UT be competitive enough to work in banking in the Northeast or Wall Street? If not, which school is best? Currently UT and BU are my top two choices, but I am open to all suggestions. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance!

If you're planning on staying in the Texas area and/or costs matter then you really should just narrow it down to Texas vs. A&M, of which Texas is the better choice.

Much more difficult than being in McCombs, but still possible. The liberal arts career service office is a joke compared to McCombs', so you would have to do most of the legwork on your own especially if you're not Plan II honors.

FYI, I believe McCombs requires work experience now for all MBA admits, so you can't do Econ then directly enter the MBA program. You could do Econ-MPA though.

UT, kill it, then transfer to macombs.

Agree with this sentiment, but be advised that it is very, very difficult to transfer in. I believe the acceptance rate is

Thank you for the reply! My dream/anticipation was to get out of Texas (hence why I didn't apply for honors at UT) however right now UT is the cheapest for me. I'm not too bothered staying in state, but my concern is how hard it is to transfer into McCombs. I don't know how much you know about McCombs/UT, but would not getting into McCombs and staying as Econ be a serious disadvantage/cause me to be looked at recruiters as simply a McCombs reject?

It's definitely possible to transfer in but it's not easy, it takes a 3.8+ in a specific set of classes. There are hundreds of applicants and typically like 50-80 get accepted (may be more, may be less but I think it's around 50)

They won't see if you were rejected, so you could play it off if you don't get in. Especially if you do Econ to MSF. Otherwise you will be at a massive disadvantage without McCombs OCR, like you will see maybe 5% of the postings that your friends in BBA will see. It's not impossible to get a good placement out of Econ, there's typically a few every year that go to BB IBD/good MC/HF/etc, but they are not very common.

PM me if you want more color.

Also, if you have even a small interest in college football/sports in general, Texas is definitely the best choice of the schools you mentioned.

I don't know how much you know about McCombs/UT

I was an external transfer into McCombs. I double majored in a BBA at McCombs and a BA in economics (liberal arts), so I'm familiar with both programs at Texas.

Short answer: yes. UT's econ program is good in terms of academics, but their career services office is terrible. The comments Btown made are correct. If you are very proactive at networking and joining student clubs you will have opportunities as an econ student, but these opportunities will be a fraction of what McCombs students get. Put another way: you will have to bust it for opportunities that McCombs students have fall in their lap. It may not be fair, but that's life.

Cause me to be looked at recruiters as simply a McCombs reject?

No. Nobody will view you as a "McCombs reject." For one thing, recruiters have no idea whether you applied to McCombs to begin with, nor do they really care. From the recruiters' perspective, they know that McCombs students are of a certain high quality, whereas students from other colleges are of a unknown but on average lesser quality. It's easier for them just to recruit at McCombs.

Send me a private message if you want more details. If cost is a consideration UT is probably your best bet regardless of how the McCombs thing works out. The econ to PPA program is also a decent option if internally transferring falls through.
