View on fakes

Somebody said, "Also have a friend from Shanghai who brings be back nice Presidential knock-off Rolexes for 15 bucks."

I dont know about this. I think fake watches and fake ties are pretty pathetic. I would rather wear a Timex than a fake Rolex. It is extremely cheesy.

I'm not convinced about fakes...either don't be worried about labels and wear something you think looks nice at a price you are comfortable with or put up the cash and know you have the real deal.

I'm totally sick of seeing women with fake LV bags...they don't even look good.

The purchase of fakes is pretty absurd. The only thing that's worth buying fake IMO is jewels, because you can't feel comfortable travelling with a $250,000 necklace.

Somebody? Why don't you just say "Wasting Time?"

You won't even know if my watch is fake or real so I don't see why you would care. I'll be the one with the fake stuff (that no one knows is fake) with all the money in my pocket.

fake people wear fake watches. if you cant afford it, you cant afford it. thats it. and if you say you can afford it, then buy it. and if you dont want to buy it that means you cant afford it.

Smart people who understand that a fake Rolex watch is the exact same thing as a real Rolex watch know how to use their money wisely. It's like food, you can buy expensive brand name stuff or go for the regular stuff that costs a bunch cheaper and is relatively the same stuff. You

No, they are not the same. They are in fact very different, in terms of their internal mechanisms. But you care not about that, just the superficial aspects. If you don't want to drop 5K on a watch then don't get one. But if you won't a Rolex, but don't want to drop 5K, than you cannot afford it.

Bullshit, they are an exact copy with the glass back where you can see inside of the watch (when you move it spins the wheel and charges the watch). Those kids in the sweatshops make some good stuff.

and they are not an exact copy. they are fake. they are for losers. they are for wannabes. they are for people who only see the outside of things. they are for ignorant underlings. they are for people who will never be anything. fake watches for fake people.

i agree with wasting, as long as the quality is more or less similiar, I'd rather save money. Granted many knock offs are crap, but if you can buy something for 1/20th of a cost, that'll last 1/4th of the time then its a good deal.

But yes its retarded to tell people its real when its fake.

no, im not. i just saw that post and decided to stike up a convo. i am just sharing my opinion. if you dont like the post you dont have to read it.

when i was in college i couldnt afford much. so i walked around in gym shorts and a tshirt. when i got my job i could afford a little more so i bought a Tag. Now, i can afford more so i will buy what i want. if it is a 5k watch i wont say, "well this watch is expensive and i dont want to loose it, so ill buy a fake." thats not the way it works. you buy something that expensive b/c you can afford it and its implications.

but why buy the fake rolex at all if you're just worried about telling the time? I see your point about not "wasting" money, but labels and status symbols in general are normally signs that you don't have to worry about the cash. Its the difference in going for the second cheapest bottle of champagne (not wanting to go out of your spending comfort zone but wanting to be seen with the champagne) vs getting a nice bottle of wine that you know you will enjoy - why bother? I know nothing about watches per se, but I know that a lot of effort goes into the ongoing service etc that you get...which you wouldn't obviously get from a fake.

See my 15-dollar fake Rolex watch is pretty high quality for a fake; it's better than spending 30 dollars on a Timex or whatever. People who see it go

watch is like the only "jewelry" that guys have, so think of it as necklace etc for a woman. Would you buy a knock off that looked exactly the same for 10 times cheaper

i am sure they would. if it was a tiffanys, they wouldnt go to some sleeze shop to buy a fake tiffanys. they would just buy another brand.

well women are known to be brand whores. I dunno, I might chance when I get into IB, but as of right now, I'd much rather save the money for something functions almost the same as the original.

...sure it might break faster, but with the extra money you save, you can get a new set.

no we just want to be real. fakes hurt capitalism. its like buying something fake that says IBM on it. its not an IBM, if you want an IBM buy the real thing. if you cant afford it, go to ur local shop and pick up a cheap job. its a personality issue.

I was going to write out an response on how retarded you are with this post, I cant even believe you're in banking, but I

Dan, you're still in time out. Don't pretend you're in any position to mock one of the more reasonable posters than yourself.

Besides, why don't you spend some of your "spare time" at the gym? I remember you saying you would rather be yelled at than miss a day at the gym. Instead of posting here, do something productive for yourself like reducing your resemblance to a penguin.

i already went to the gym before work, thanks for the reminder though. Also, i love how you memorize my statements. before i though you had no life, but know i am absoluetly sure you have no life.

Yes, it is I who has no life. Look at your post count, and look at mine. I'm starting to think you spend the majority of the day refreshing the forum page.

Regarding me memorizing your statements, I can't help it if I have a good memory. Then again, I am not on steroids or cocaine, so that must help. Besides, who can forget such classics as "I was unable to satisfy my sexual partner today", or "I listen to Phil Collins"?

You have no life. And yes, thank you for reminding me that I have no life. But the defining point is that I am in IBD, and you are not. By the way, that is not a good memory. Not only are you a loser, but you are a liar as well. You clearly looked up my posts. Additionally, the beauty of this board is that I can share my experiences with my fellow IBers with some unanimity. Sure you know my name, but there are tons of people with my name. I know of three at my firm. Finally, thank you for reminding me that I like Phil Collins. He is truly a great musician. I am sorry you have not had the experience to listen to his music. Maybe someday you will. Good day.

Dan Bush...thank you for reminding me that I like Phil Collins. He is truly a great musician. I am sorry you have not had the experience to listen to his music. Maybe someday you will. Good day.

This reminds me of American Psycho, you must of read that book way too many times since there is a whole damn chapter on Genesis.

Dan Bushwhat are you talking about

How fake are you? You claim to like Phil Collins and you didn't even know that he was in a band called Genesis? In the book American Psycho, there's a whole chapter talking about how Genesis is the shit, blah blah blah... I guess you didn't read American Psycho.

No, Dan. The defining point here is that you suck at your job. No one cares what you think of fake watches, or your frustrated sex life, and that's certainly not sharing your IB experiences.

The ONLY reason you post here is because you have managed to annoy every person in your firm, and they no longer talk to you. There are probably 3000 or so analysts, but from what I can tell, you are the only one who chooses to spend the majority of his time on here. Is the dealflow in your group really that bad? Look at your post count for god sakes.

you are assuming i suck at my job. well, good for you. you are wrong once again. it is called multi tasking- doing a few things at once. like building this model and talking on the computer. yes, thats right flashbang, non-retarded people can do multiple things at once. also, people with their heads out of their respective asses can do many things at once. why do you have so much animosity for me? i know why. because you are in college and you live on this board, hence you have no lfe. when i was in school, i would have never visited a message board such as this. good day sir.

Dan Bushwhy do you have so much animosity for me?
That's an easy one. Because you are a violent, irrational, mood-swinging douchebag who makes enemies everywhere he turns.

And how do I know you are not good at your job? Well for one thing, you do not know the meaning of words you use (ex. unanimity). If you really are at a BB like you claim, you probably got in through the back door, and are without a doubt, one of the worst analysts there.

buyside, i think it also has to do with the product. i.e. the examples you mentioned were about clothes, of course those won't last as long because fabric is a lot more susceptible to tears.

but some parts buying fake isn't as bad

also I think, there are different quality fakes. i.e. in the car world you have Spoon(about 400 bucks per wheel), then you have Rota knock offs(about 500 bucks for the set) and then you have Fike/Nippon knock offs which are about $350 for the set.

Yes spoon ones are about 2 lbs less per wheel, but when you hit a pot hole, it doesn't matter if you are using rotas or spoon the rim will bend. This is why 95% of people use the Rota products. Because the quality is still good. The fike/nippon on the other hand there are lots of people complaining that the paint looks like crap after a few months.

Same with clothes, sure you can get a knock off for $4.99, but there is usually another much higher quality knock off for $9.99 that'll last a lot longer

To return to the subject of fakes.

There are quite a few differences in price and quality of the fakes as well. A fifteen dollar rolex fake is pathetic. Anyone with a bit of interest in watches will be able to tell the difference after a quick look, just because of the material of the casing and the internals. However there are excellent Rolex fakes around starting at about 300 euros, which are undistinguishable to anyone but Rolex engineers when they truly take the watch apart.

Personally I think Rolex is for plebs. I prefer to express the difference with the subtle signal of a Patek Philippe.

The sole reason why any investment banking asshle would buy a Rolex is so every other investment banking asshle will immediately know how much he paid for it. They are the most played out watches around.

And guess what...the only reason why one would buy a FAKE rolex is...well, it's the same reason.

If you can't afford it...don't buy it. But for god sakes don't buy a fake one...completely class-less.

Having said all of that, the Rolex Daytona is one of my all time favorite watches. But if I had to pick...I would go Patek.

I have a very low pro rolex. No one realizes what it is until it is talked about.

It was a gift anyway, I would have likely bought something else if it was my choice, but I like it.

Rolex isn't bad man. I would wear one although my old tag has a great deal of sentimental value. And like I said...the Daytona is an all time favorite. But then again you hardly ever see them. Just last week I was pulled over by a cop on the God damn Dallas tollway...was doing 105mph...racing my buddy to happy hour (He's a pimp with a brand new lexus 460LS...even my two month old lexus 250IS couldn't keep up).

Anyway, so I get pulled over and I notice the fcking cop has a fcking stainless submariner. That's the kind of shit I'm talking about...this guy makes 25K a year and he's got a damn Rolex...they are fucking everywhere!!!!! Completely played out!

yeah cops make more. i got two friends of mine at PDs in central Connecticut that live great on their all-in of 100k. plus they get pensions after 20 yrs. its the shit for living a solid family life.

I just googled it. But my grandparents live there.

I was just noticing that cops in CA get a month of vacation from the get go. That's pretty crazy.

Another absurdly paid job is dock workers in CA. You can work about 80 hours a week on the docks with a high school diploma and make almost 200k a year. A friend of mine knows a bunch of people that work there. This one guy workes about 100 hours a week and pulls in 250k a year.

When you go to the parking lot its filled with benzes, escalades, the works.

so from time to time I look at non banking jobs (normally when some idiot VP has asked for some idiot time consuming analysis on a non deal) but the salaries just suck. I see high level corporate exec positions (CFO etc) that don't tempt me money-wise. Its weird selling private firms, seeing what the top guys make and thinking "wow - he's like 100 years old and I'll make more than him next year/ I made more than him last year".
