I've been trying to cut back on unhealthy mixed drinks (whiskey and coke, rum and coke, etc.) and as a result have started drinking vodka cranberry. Is this inappropriate for a social business setting (since it's usually considered a "girl" drink)? If so, does anyone have any suggestions for some healthier mixed drinks? Thanks.
Vodka cranberry - inappropriate for a guy?

Vodka tonic could be a good one too, if you're worried about the color and fruitiness of the drink.
If you really want healthy, don't put the booze in in the first place. Alcohol itself is calorie-rich, though with zero nutritional value.

ishender, you know that's just a Margarita on the rocks, right? Tequila, Triple Sec, and Rose's Sweetened.
I agree with
I agree with iambateman; If you really want a healthier drink, I would go with diet coke and rum/vodka. or just take shot of tequila. Don't drink too much beer unless you want that nasty beer belly.
The cranberry juice served
The cranberry juice served at bars (and found in most grocery stores) is just as sugar and calorie laden as soda. Anyway, if you mix your alcohol with a diet beverage (like rum and diet coke), you'll get drunker faster. Sometime about how without the sugar, the alcohol metabolizes into your blood stream quicker.
Ok I got un-lazy and found the study that proves this:

Just an opinion - As a girl who tries not to frivolously "spend" calories on unnecessary foods/drinks (save the occasional McDonald's trip...), I NEVER order vodka cranberries.
i'd absolutely give you shit
i'd absolutely give you shit for drinking a vodka cranberry. i like the diet coke/rum suggestion myself, as well as the gin/diet tonic water. with few exceptions, mixed drinks that aren't either clear or black are unacceptable for guys.

not a fan of diet soda
I'm not a fan of diet soda either, due to the chemicals and other unhealthy shit they put in them (the artificial sweeteners always make me feel sick). And I only drink regular soda with mixed drinks. The dark liquors usually seem more unhealthy to me than clear alcohol so maybe I'll try the gin and tonic - but how much better is tonic for you than coke?
Completely fine. Also try

check again, there are more calories. tonic water is loaded with calories, almost as much as coke (around 10 kcal/fl. oz). i like it because it is healthier, sort of.

Best advice here. If health is your #1 issue, lay off the alcohol.
But if health isn't your #1 issue, then whiskey on the rocks is a good choice.
haha
try patron silver on the rocks w lime juice and a little of triple sec
Someone watches real housewives of New York.
Cranberry juice isn't all that healthy. It's loaded with sugar. Drink Vodka and club soda, or vodka on the rocks.
If you are most concerned
If you are most concerned with health but still consuming alcohol - regular tonic is loaded with sugar - opt for sugarfree, diet tonic. Most mixers dont have any added nutritional benefit, only added sugars. Or light beers like Amstel or Michelob Ultra are low-cal
If you are most concerned with your masculinity - opt for a whiskey on the rocks - i prefer Jameson
7&7
7&7
Let's assume that your
Let's assume that your average shot of hard alcohol has 100 calories. (A shot of 40% alcohol has 100 calories)
If you're an average sized sedentary woman, you take in about 1800 calories a day. Let's assume an average sedentary man takes in 2400 calories a day.
More than 4 drinks in a night is binge drinking for a woman. More than 5-6 drinks is binge drinking for a man.
If you're in banking, I will assume you're probably lucky to get out twice a week to drink. That's 800 calories extra a week for a woman and 1200 extra for a man.
Divide the 800 extra calories over 7 days...115 calories extra per day for a woman.
Divide the 1200 extra calories over 7 days...170 calories extra per day for a man.
The woman is now at 1915 calories per day, from 1800. The man is now at 2570, from 2400.
Conclusion: You can burn these calories easily. Hit the gym or take the stairs. If you're gaining weight, it's probably not from the calories in alcohol. The problem with alcohol lies in the metabolism of alcohol. It's a poison, so it is metabolized before other macro-nutrients in your body. So if you eat a lot of food and then drink heavily, that food you just ate is more likely to be stored as fight while your body is metabolizing the alcohol.
Question for investment bankers here - how many "actual" drinks do you have per week??? I am very curious about this.
nay on tonic
Tonic as a healthy alternative? Sure, if you're a fucking 18th century Anglo-Indian trying to fight off malaria. Otherwise stick to diet sodas because tonic will make you fat, brah.
you've got to be kidding

You're joking, right? Your body's not going to spread out the 800 extra calories from 2 nights of drinking over 7 days. What's not used is going to be stored as fat. Plain and simple.
Not to mention that heavy drinking makes it harder to work out the next day because you feel like shit.
Be a man and drink whiskey,
Be a man and drink whiskey, straight.
Get vodka/soda instead of vodka/tonic
Two things that annoy me
Two things that annoy me about this thread:
-mixers are mixers precisely because of the sugar to mask the alcohol. You can't have your cake and eat it too; if the alcohol tastes too "yucky" either stop drinking, grow a pair or switch to diet and tolerate the weird taste. There are no other options.
-what is with people signing off on their post? There is no reason to have your name in your sig or some dumb out of context quote.

You need a long-term consistent increase in calories to notice any significant fat gain.
Take a nutrition class before you spout bull shit. JJC, I bet you believe in spot fat reduction too. If you do butt exercises, you lose fat in your butt, right? No.
When you have extra calories, they can be stored as glycogen OR fat. What happens when you burn more calories then you take in two days after drinking? You burn glycogen and fat stores. You just balanced the books, in a sense. Two days later.
Intelligent people calculate calories over broader instances of time than one night.
wow

Intelligent people calculate calories over broader instances of time than one night.
Talk to any nutritionist, dietician, body builder, CSCS, etc. and ask them what their caloric intake is or what a recommended caloric intake is. I bet they'll say xx calories/day, not xx calories/week.
And before you pull out your "take a nutrition class" bullshit, I've taken a number of classes and have done extensive research on nutritional science, so I know what I'm talking about.
Your body doesn't just magically burn glycogen/fat stores if you're at a net caloric deficit. If you're eating less, your body will accommodate by either attacking your muscles (since they're causing you to use more energy) and/or by reducing your metabolic rate so you need less calories to survive, thus holding on to as much of your fat reserves as possible.
Tell anyone who studies nutrition (and an Introductory Nutrition class doesn't count) that eating one 3000-calorie meal or two 1500-calorie meals a day is the same as eating six 500-calorie meals a day because in the end, it's still 3000 calories and you're "balancing the books". Let me know how many people take you seriously.
You calculate the number of
You calculate the number of calories it takes to gain fat over a period of time. Not one meal. Not one night. Not one drink at a time.
Calories to balance out over the course of day. Do you know how many hours it takes to digest a meal? You obviously do know something about nutrition. Try reading what I actually typed again, and I'm sure you'll understand. Someone with some education in nutrition would.
Actually, my calculations are not optimal. A better way would be to calculate per month. Even better, per 3 months. A year might be over doing it, because eating / drinking habits can change quite a bit over that time period.
Any shift in weight over a week could most likely be attributed to a change in water due to electrolyte concentration (among other things). So, calories should be spread out over longer time periods if they represent a consistent increase in intake. Think about it this way - if you binge on 1600 calories of pizza in an hour...you do NOT have to do exactly 1600 calories of exercise the very next day. Short periods of time, like a night, are insignificant.
A pound of fat contains 3500 calories. It doesn't matter which days of the week you choose to burn whatever proportion of calories you want. The simple fact is, you need to burn those calories in that week.
http://walking.about.com/cs/howtoloseweight/a/howcalburn.htm
So, if I'm admitting my calculations were over too short of a period (and YOU are saying they are averaged out over a too long period), you're not getting the point.
Does a beer have that much
Does a beer have that much more calories than a shot of hard liquor?
