What wallet and watch are you using?

My friend in the industry is asking me to get a new watch and a new wallet to suit the financial industry image. He says please get a branded wallet and watch. Currently I am using a casio g-shock and a wallet that costs less than $100 given by friends on my birthday.

He says image is very important and for watches, he asked me to look at swiss watches like omega and for wallets, consider bottega. I looked at their prices online and was like wow.

Is image really that important? What wallets and watches are you guys wearing?

Asatar:

Wallet = as long as it doesn't have Donald Duck or "No Fear" on it, nobody cares in the slightest. Watch = doesn't matter. Don't show up in a Rolex or similar as a junior but otherwise wear whatever the hell you want.

Come on dude! I wear a Rolex and nobody ever gave me any shit about it. Actually, most people don't even realize it's an expensive watch.

Most people don't know anything about watches even if it is a Rolex or something similar. My Tag Heuer retails for $4500 and no one knows or cares unless they like watches, then its a nice conversation starter.

Totally agree. Wear whatever watch you like and no one will even notice. The people on this board that parrot the idea that junior bankers shouldn't wear nice watches are nerds.

Your friend sounds like a douche.

Simply put, you could just not wear a watch - no one will ever notice. If you do, just don't wear a cheap rubber/plastic watch. You can get a decent watch ~$100 with a metal band, as long as it has a simple, classic style with minimal details no one will ever notice or comment.

Wallet, a basic black or brown leather wallet will do - at whatever price range you are comfortable with. I don't recall the last time I had a conversation with someone about why their wallet looks awesome/like crap.

Then again, I don't work in IBD so maybe I'm just spewing crap.

I second this

It's a matter of preference. I don't judge people's watch choices.j If you don't care about that stuff and buy the cheap things, then that's fine. Some people really care and like to invest in their watch and wallet and other types of accessories and some would rather spend that on another vacation or a new toy for the outdoors. Sometimes someone who makes very little money can have super expensive things because they spend it all and some people who make tons of money can have very cheap things because they save it all. It's all perspective.

If you find watches interesting and want to buy a nice one to show off, then cool do it. If you don't really care and would rather spend that money elsewhere, then who cares.

Nothing left to be said.

This day in age you'd better be using an RFID blocking wallet, which can be made out of leather or a special steel mesh. Crooks in crowded places, such as train stations/airports/subways -probably more so in Europe than in the US- use specially designed scanners that work very much like supermarkets inventory scanners to steal credit card information.

They steal your credit cards without ever touching your wallet.

Winners bring a bigger bag than you do. I have a degree in meritocracy.

Doesn't matter at all - if you're getting the work done and getting it done well I doubt your seniors / bosses will care what you have on your wrist.

I've seen king of the jungle MD's who didn't care about brands and I've met summer interns obsessed with the 'H' on their belt not being shiny enough.

Personally I collect watches so does my boss - however that's not representative of the entire team.

Skip the wallet, get an "as seen on TV" Slim Clip. Carrys all the cash you need and like 10 cards. Its alot more streamlined in your pocket, looks cool, and can last forever.

Wallet: Prada, 6-card, money clip.

Watch: Montblanc Timewalker Auto, Movado Bold, IWC Portuguese, and Nike Fuel Band (when working out/not in the office).

Friends help you move. Real friends help you move bodies.

Be practical. Use a watch that fits under your cuff (unless you wear tailormade shirts), so wear something lean. I wear a Rolex Date. Nobody notices, it's an everyday accessory and it fits nicely under the cuff.

Chose a lean wallet or moneyclip. You don't want a bulky wallet when you wear a tailored suit.

Oh yea... No gold watches unless you're an MD and it's a Patek

I don't wear a watch, not really sure why as I love watches but I just haven't felt like spending money on a decent one.

As far as wallets go, I've been trying to carry around a card case with only my credit card, ID and maybe my debit card in it. I've found that large wallets just encourage you to keep a bunch of crap you don't need. Considering I rarely carry cash on me it hasn't been an issue so far.

Your wallet doesn't matter since its in your pocket most of the time. Just make sure it isn't something a kid would have.

A watch is necessary however. The brand isn't as important as just having something decent on your wrist. Look at something like an Omega, Tag Heuer or Seiko (if you want to keep it cheap).

If I see a guy in business professional wearing a g-shock or with a naked wrist, I can't take them seriously. How you dress is your first impression on anyone and you don't want to risk screwing it up.

I wear a cheap iron-man watch. It's plastic.

I used to wear a nice mechanical watch (swiss) but after long days of making excel my bitch, it hurt my wrist. I need something light on my wrist to allow my nimble fingers to dominate 'dem spreadsheet shortcuts

Also, it's nice being able to set it, and 3 months later still have it accurate within a minute. My mechanical watch I would never know if I was off by a few minutes. I still carry the nice watch in my suitcase and wear it when appropriate

Wallet: I made my wallet from pieces of merino wool felt and did a hand saddle stitching on it. It is card holder and not a bi or tri folder wallet. I like it more than any leather wallet I have ever owned. It is also a good conversation piece when people see it.

Watch: I have many but my favorite is a watch from a small boutique German company called Steinhart. It is their limited gold edition Nav-B pilot style watch.

Here is the watch: http://www.steinhartwatches.de/en/NavB-Uhr-Limited-gold-Edition,101.html

Here is the packaging it came in with the extras:

You're born, you take shit. You get out in the world, you take more shit. You climb a little higher, you take less shit. Till one day you're up in the rarefied atmosphere and you've forgotten what shit even looks like. Welcome to the layer cake, son.

No one cares. If your work is good, people won't care what wallet you pull out of your pocket or what you have on your wrist. I had an Omega as an intern and only one person ever noticed it (it was a senior guy who complimented me on it, and we ended up getting into regular conversations about watches/other fancy stuff. That certainly didn't hurt my return offer hopes). I also have an expensive wallet that was a gift from my gf and again no one cares/knows what it is.

FWIW, a lot of 1st year analysts I know spent a decent chunk of their first bonus on a watch/expensive suit etc.

Bottom line, don't listen to your friend. If you want to spend some coin on a nice watch, go ahead. If you want to spend money on a nice wallet, go ahead. Just do it for yourself, not to impress people you work with.

Currently wearing my Baume et Mercier Capeland S Chronograph. I have a small watch collection and rotate them ever so often. I wear it because I love watches, but not to impress anyone. It's always great to chat with fellow watch lovers. Paulson and Geithner both wear digital watches, are you gonna judge them negatively because of that?

Wallet wise, I have a Bally after I lost my Coach one and I couldn't find another wallet at the time with a picture window that is not a separate piece on its own.

I'd choose something understated which still fits/reflects your personality. Avoiding big logos (no matter if Rip Curl, Gucci or LV) is always a good idea.

Myself: Watch: Reverso or Swatch New Gent Wallet: Gazelleskin :) Kidding, it's a dark navy one by Boggi with orange interiour

Smallest brown leather bi-fold on the rack. Nothing fancy. Just avoid Velcro.

I don't understand some people getting upset or saying that nobody cares. I care. I like watches a lot. I collect watches. Watches are fucking cool. If you don't like them, don't wear them. But I know that plenty of people care a good amount about watches.

That's great. I like watches to. But he isn't buying watches because he likes watches. He's buying a watch to fit in. A legitimate retort here is that nobody gives a fuck, because it is true.

People DO give a fuck; that's the problem. I'd never have bought any of the expensive crap in my closet if it weren't for people giving a fuck. You don't show up to work in jeans and a t-shirt do you? You know how ridiculous it looks to have a nice suit and a cheap watch (or cheap wallet, shoes, belt, or briefcase for that matter)? You have to get an outfit that is fitting for what your job requires. Especially when you're in a SALES position; and IBD, no matter what position you're in, is a SALES job. People who don't understand this simple basic fact do not succeed on the SELL side of finance. Would you buy legal services from an attorney who showed up to your office with a cheap suit and a casio? So similarly why would someone buy M&A services from a banker that was dressed like crap?

For me, it all comes to three factors (1) taste, (2) money, (3) environment.

(1) By that viewpoint, it’s simple: you like watches, you get one; you don’t... well, you don’t. If you feel uncomfortable or you think it’s a useless expense, that’s fine, just say it. If you love watches, just make sure you don't earn the "cocky analyst who loves to show off his expensive watch(es)" stigma and you should be fine. (2) Say you decided to get a watch. Does it mean “yours is the earth and everything that's in it, and - which is more - you'll be a man, my son”? No. You gotta pay. Now, many of you are paid to exercise financial judgment, so go and do it. Every watch can be bought, from the $5 rubber watch to the Lange und Soehne, so choose wisely, within your means, and fast. (3) Now the most important: I don’t buy the “I don’t use a watch, I have a phone” shit because looking at this matter exclusively through the utilitarian lens is childish. A lot in modern society is about signaling. For example, I get pissed when junior guys take public transportation to see clients. Not because I’m a douche (not for that, at least). You can say "well, that's G&A savings". And you'll hear G&A SAVINGS MY ASS. It jeopardizes the notion that we have an exclusive team, with top professionals whose time is precious, expensive and optimized, bla bla. Which is in the end what allows us to charge hefty fees. No one cares? Maybe, but if someone powerful does, I may be fucked. Take no stupid risks, we have enough serious risks to worry about.

Meaning: exercise judgment and calculate wisely whether your job, firm, duties or clients require a watch and a nice wallet, and of which sort. This is a social convention as much as any other, and if you lack the sense to sort this out you probably shouldn't be in this business in the first place. Oh, and please, remember the unwritten-but-equally-golden “no gold watches” rule. Doesn’t matter if you’re the janitor or Warren fucking Buffet. It’s poor taste.

No, it doesn't matter that much. Poor style might make you look bad (g-shock watch with a suit - are you an engineer?), but expense should be less of a factor. That said, as above, some people will notice and care, and some of those people might matter to your career. And, some people who will notice and care will not be impressed by a nice watch/wallet. Warren Buffet would probably consider it wasteful and pointless.

Anyway - LV wallet (a gift that I would never have chosen for myself - http://thefashionation.com/product_images/d/e25__03627.jpg) Omega Speedmaster (which I did buy for myself)

The only time people will notice you're watch is if you're a lefty and wear your watch on your right hand. When people shake my hand they usually are surprised to see a watch there.

"Do not go gentle into that good night"

Since it's summer, wear a watch that has a stainless steel bracelet or some type of rubber that looks dressy. Leather will absorb your sweat and stink during these hot and humid months. Bulova & Seiko have plenty of sub $300 watches that can look respectable.

For a wallet, again doesn't have to be fancy. I'd go with something basic, non branded. You can buy a quality leather wallet from Saddleback leather company, google em. It'll last you a lifetime, hand it down to someone when you upgrade in a few years. Warning, you might just want to keep it.

Watch: Chopard Classic Wallet: no name I picked up in a trip to Italy

If someone is asking you to get a new wallet you should tell him to shut the fuck up because no one even cares. I cant think of one persons wallet at my firm that I know...What a dumb ass

As for the watch its hardly important is more personal than anything. If he thinks "upgrading" to an Omega is going to help your "financier image" it just further solidifies my assumption above...dumb ass.

In short, dont worry about it. If your friends gave you that wallet and it means something to you, keep it untill the day you die.

You're probably best off getting something that's pretty thin and non-bulky, but large enough to hold some credit cards and business cards. I personally use a slim duo-fold wallet during the day, and switch to a basic money clip card case at night when I only need to carry 1-2 credit cards and some cash. You can get something pretty decent and durable from Tumi. Just remember that the wallet is meant to be practical and not really to be seen, so no need to spend your fortunes on a wallet...

I use a Hermes baby goat skin credit card case and a custom made money clip. Its a platinum 2-inch faux Binder clip with a small skull and bones engraved for every 25K I've earned in bonus along the last 3 years.

I sometimes leave my cash in my desk drawer and use the clip to keep presentation decks together so the other analysts/associates can see I've been top bucket 3 years running.

It's a coincidence that you asked this question because this very topic was being discussed today in my coverage group.

Turns out that out of 6 of us, 3 of us all have the same wallet.

Leather, single fold....it's like something that a hollywood actor would use and it's got a little attitude. I highly recommend it and for $25 - $28 (embroidered) you will have more cash to stuff inside of it.

No offense, but I think some of you need to take your head out of your ass. I didn't ask "what designer wallet will make me look like the shit." I was simply inquiring based on logistical, realistic, and durability concerns. I honestly think it's a valid question....we wear dress pants everyday...it's hard to hide a thick wallet in your back pocket...and so I was curious. Damn...I hope I'm not so short on temper after I start in July.

No, you need to pull your head out of your a**. Seriously, if you don't want a bulky wallet in your pocket, then buy a thin wallet and/or don't put very much in it. Maybe you could carry it in your inside jacket pocket. If you are wondering if a clip will hold enough, why don't you ask yourself if a clip will hold everything you want to carry on you. Do you need someone else to hold your d*ck when you piss?

I'd say the simpler the better... $200 on a wallet seems crazy to me. Hell, your wallet should be spending most of its time in your pocket or in a drawer, out of sight.

I bought a 2 pack of wallets off Amazon for 4.99 and gave one to my friend. We've both had the same wallet for 5 years. Not sure why anyone would spend $200 on a wallet.

"Look, you're my best friend, so don't take this the wrong way. In twenty years, if you're still livin' here, comin' over to my house to watch the Patriots games, still workin' construction, I'll fuckin' kill you. That's not a threat, that's a fact.

I have a wallet that I got for $3 at Walmart. Works great. It is pretty much an exact replica of the one in MJK's link only it has a couple more card slots and no logo.

Love the fact that this guy who's probably one of the most level headed, experienced, and successful member on this board uses a wallet from walmart. Priorities people...learn to distinguish them.

I think- therefore I fuck

I no longer carry a wallet...had a few close calls where I actually dropped it getting out of a cab etc. and fortunately realized that myself in time or were reminded by kind folks nearby.

Then I came to realize that I really only need to carry with me a driver license, a credit card, a debit card and a little cash (usually I never carry more than $40 with me at anytime) anyway and all of these fit easily into my pant pocket.

Too late for second-guessing Too late to go back to sleep.

Same here. It's the ultimate minimalist wallet...no wallet.

Handmade unfinished leather, was gift from a friend.... He runs a farm/butcher shop and I asked what they do with the stuff they don't sell. He mentioned they sell the hide to a local leather company. Got very nice briefcase from him too.

in all seriousness, I use a full wallet in my inner coat/jacket pocket when I'm wearing one, or I use a half card case/half clip with the essentials (ID, debit, credit, AAA, and some cash) when it's in my pants.

I don't carry cash. I bought a ralph lauren slim card holder from an outlet store on sale for like 10 bucks. Holds the essentials: Amex, Dunkin Gift Card, Debit Card, Office Card, Metro Card, and a few business cards for high profile guys I for some reason haven't saved in my phone.
