Wharton Continuing Education or Imperial Online MBA?
Biglaw corporate in NYC and intend to remain in law, although may relocate to Asia in the near future.
I am considering between the Wharton CPD (where you do a series of courses at Wharton and earn a certificate) or an online MBA at Imperial College in London. Costs are comparable for both programs.
The brand name of Wharton is of course a plus but it is not an MBA and I recognise that it won't be viewed the same way. Imperial is not known for its business school and it is an online program, but it has a good overall reputation in the UK and in Asia. My objective is to boost my business and financial skills as I am considering going into an-house legal role and perhaps transition to management from there. Any thoughts would be much appreciated. Why not do a PT Stern MBA or an EMBA?
I have thought about the PT Stern program but that will tie me to NY for the next three years which I am not sure about. Cost is also another consideration. Wharton CPD and Imperial online will cost at most $50k while Stern will cost about $110k. Given that I have no intention to leave law and I do not think my salary will increase significantly as a result of an MBA, ROI is another factor.
So if you're doing this just to learn why don't you just domoocs vs spending money
Agreed with @shorttheworld. If knowledge is your main pursuit, then just do Coursera. You can take the entire Wharton Core Curriculum on there, plus a whole lot more. It might not be quite as pretty on your resume as a "certificate", but since you're staying in law, whatever certificate you have likely won't make or break the hiring decision anyway. You'll certainly be able to speak to the courses you took in interviews and list them on your resume.
I'm hoping to get a qualification to show that I am some aptitude for finance/business and transition into a management role in future. I did a liberal arts degree followed by law and have been in law since grad.
Follow-up: do you hope to get this qualification to get your next job, or to move up to management once you move in-house? I can see how an actual qualification may be important if you want the bullet on your resume, but not if you simply hope to move up within your next company and think this is the ticket.
My impression is that since you'll be moving to an in-house legal job, they will care about your law experience. The General Counsel and other lawyers interviewing your are probably not all that worried about your management aspirations, or your aptitude for moving out of the legal side of the business.
Once you get there and are working on a transition, then maybe the classes/certificate could be valuable, but I still they'll care about your actual performance and ability to grasp the big picture. If you still think your need is to get a qualification, then I would do whatever has Wharton written on it, since you would be doing it to turn heads and list on your resume. Wharton looks better than the other place.
I think the coursers certified certificate for Wharton is maybe 1500. If you want something like that then do that
How about a more affordable MBA from a strong school that provides the education that you are looking for without big bucks or being tied to one place? US News lists top online MBA programs. SUNY Oswego is a state school in the top 15 -- oswego.edu/mba
