My question is, if we want to go back to B Schools after working for 2 years, we need to submit our applications 1 year after starting working and we seldom had any chance to perform as a "leader". How do you guys try to work out this problem???

How to gain leadership skills? (Originally Posted: 09/20/2011)
Does anybody have any tricks on how to develop leadership skills? I've been trying to lately and, contrary to what some people make it out to be, it doesn't seem like something you're exactly born with (or, at least, you're not screwed if you're not).
And I don't mean stuff like joining a student club, I'm talking about actually turning myself into more of a leader. So far, what I've been doing lately has seemed to help, but I was never really motivated to be a leader before anyways. So even though it's a pretty big improvement, it's not saying much.
If you're not born with the qualities of a good leader than you need to build those skills. In my experience, you build those through putting yourself into leadership positions.
If you're a trustworthy, intelligent, decently charismatic, like-able person than you shouldn't really have a problem growing comfortable and being successful in a leadership role.
Rent a police costume, get a whistle and go to time square and start ordering people around. Helps if you're > 400 pounds, Asian and have a dildo on your head.
Read How to Win Friends and Influence People. Definitely helps a lot.

I am interested in evaluating what good examples of leadership are, as demonstrated by successful applicants to the top Bschools who were previously working in i-banking and had little, if any, time for personal/leadership initiatives?
I would say being a president of a frat would be very high regarded, shows that you're a very sociable person.

Hey people, addressing this to any past, current or recently accepted MBA students (top schools please, HBS, Wharton, Stanford and the like).
I'm a Canadian who will be wrapping a law degree (LLB undergrad) at LSE in June and will begin working at an i-bank of notable prestige in London, though not a BB, this summer. Ever the forward thinker, I like to have some concrete ideas as to the future after an analyst stint. Getting an MBA from one of the top US schools seems like the best way to ensure a lifetime 'safety net'. Now, assuming my grades , rec letters and GMAT scores are all up to par, how important would you say 'Leadership Experience' really is? I was not a prefect in high school and am rather weak on the extra curriculars (have none). I am hoping that my international experience, both studying and working, the fact that I am bi-lingual (French, English) and the fact that I have completed a law degree and worked in M&A, would be enough to compensate. Am I mistaken?
Please don't bother with any smart ass responses if you are just another 21 year old kid with an opinion, I am looking for real advice here. Thank you in advance.
A few days ago I had the opportunity to talk to a current HBS person about the MBA application process. She said that the primary thing that distinguished her was the things she did -outside- of work. Bottom line: She emphasized it. I would certainly not blow off this part of your resume.

Don't do "leadership" to strengthen your application. You take leadership in things you give a sh*t about.
Figure out what moves you, what you have conviction for, and use your imagination and ingenuity to do something about it, and along the way you may attract others to what it is you conviction for - whether it's something related to politics, social issues, the arts, music, religion, etc.
Getting "leadership" isn't like buying some flat screen TV from the Best Buy where you can simply choose from a menu of options and features, rank order them, and voila! You get "Leadership in a Box" (tied up in a neat little package with a bow on top). There isn't some cookie cutter list of activities that adcoms have in mind.
