What are the most overrated movies?
Not going to lie, I thought the Revenant as a pretty mediocre film, along with the Hateful Eight....

Agreed. It was good but the most expensive movie of all time good, IDK. Not even in my top 50.
No arguments from me on that one.
Arrival
Same. It was too slow.
I actually thought it was quite good. I wouldn't say it was amazing though, nor have I really heard a bunch of people saying it was. Then again, if that's what critics are saying.... I don't even take their opinion into consideration.
I don't think it was "bad", I just thought that it wasn't very exciting for a "thriller".
Most recently, Arrival. Overall, my pick is City of God. I thought it was boring and didn't have incredible cinematography, or a great soundtrack or anything like that to make up for it. This is despite having 8.7 on IMDB and 90% on RT, and consistently being ranked one of the greatest movies of all time.
Oh no you didn't. That shit was dope.
Well, the ratings agree with you. I just didn't think the characters were well enough developed for me to care about, and hence found the plot around them boring. Maybe my expectations were too high going in.
Are we really throwing around monkey shit for movie opinions?
Out of recent Oscar Best Picture winners - the Hurt Locker. It didn't offer anything interesting or new, and frankly I didn't find it compelling at all.
Scarface
Cheesy as hell when I watch it now. I like it more for the amusement factor
Deleted because obviously none of you can take a joke.
boo. terrible answer
False. Shawshank is a fantastic movie, it's just overplayed on TV.
The Big Lebowski is an overrated movie.
yea, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man....
I agree with this. It is a very good movie, but so many people (read: not critics) talk about it being one of the greatest movies ever made, which it isn't.
DISAGREE
star wars.... saw my first star wars last year.. cannot believe that adults buy into the force BS... and why, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, do the swords matter in a world with laser guns?!?!?!
but seriously though, its a great KID'S movie.. I just don't get the adult fandom.. In my mind, star wars is not that far from spaceballs... and spaceballs is funnier..
Not into Star Wars myself, but I see why it appeals to both adults and kids. Obviously kids like the action, lightsabers etc. But there is literally a HUGE amount of lore out there, and that seems to be the part that engrosses adults. I know this because I literally said the exact same thing you did and got ripped into by my boss who was apparently a fanatic. It seems there are a whole lot of political and economic themes that the films don't really go into.
Thank you MBA_Junkie +1
I love Star Wars but I felt Star Wars the Force Awakens is overrated. It's a remake of A New Hope, it offers nothing new and yet has like a 90 something score on RT.
THIS! Most disappointing film of all time, how many times can they blow up a death star?
spoiler alert... thanks bud
Yeah that was pretty ridiculous. Not sure if I should be cynical about Rogue One
Yeah Force Awakens was so mediocre. I was sitting in the theater at the end like "that's it?". B-/C+ grade (the prequels were all F's across the board, though Phantom's soundtrack was dope)
That.
In addition to the problems other posters have mentioned, Rey simply sucks. It's kind of hard to actually care about a character when they're so perfect that they can learn how to fly ships instantly, are instantly loved by even the most curmudgeous characters in the series, can do in a few minutes what took even the most gifted characters months and years to learn....etc.
She's so amazing at everything it's hard to take her seriously and the lack of any struggle or hardship on her part on-screen makes it difficult to build any real empathy.
Yeah they haven't made any interesting/original characters since the original trilogy.
I mostly agree with you but I will preface this by saying that I like the Star Wars franchise so I am a bit biased. I was rather annoyed that towards the end of the movie she could just start suddenly using the force and could do it better than someone who has been training as a Sith for years. With that being said, I think the idea of the creators was to draw a comparison between her and Anakin Skywalker. Both were poor, unknown kids who grew up out on the edge of the galaxy and yet both have huge, untapped potential.
I never understood how Rey could just pick up the light saber and manage to fight off Kylo Ren. Luke had to go through mad training to get decent.
Hunger Games, Twilight, Titanic
lol this thread is also a way to see what crappy movies people have seen
Children of Men
Really? 7.9 on IMDB; I feel that's pretty accurate, no?
Meh. Seems to have a weird cult following that I feel is entirely unwarranted.
It's easily Avatar, how people saw that movie as anything but Pocahontas in space I will never know. Can't believe it made as much as it did in the box office and was actually nominated for awards (how the fuck did it get nominated for best picture/ director at the Oscars).
story was basic but it was the first great 3d movie, i disagree
if you saw it non 3d then that was a waste of 3 hours
you believe a movie should be nominated for the most prestigious film award (Oscar, best picture) just because it had great visuals? I don't.
if you saw it sober* then that was a waste of 3 hours
+1
The newest Star Wars was absolutely miserable. I do not understand what people liked about it.
SaraHampar Do you sit between MarcTheMarc and dchd9 at your click farm in Mumbai or are you all the same person?
almost spit up laughing at this. thank you adapt, I needed that
Blazing saddles - edit; oh thought it said underrated in the headlines. Um see below comment.
Titanic was good the first time through, but you know what I rewound it and you wouldn't believe it but that captain hit the same damn iceberg again
hmm, the newer 007 movies
Mission Impossible series? (never saw them)
Spectre. I am a fan of Christoph Waltz. I thought he delivered some amazing lines in Inglourious Bastards and Django. I thought he could be the best bond villain of all time. Was super disappointed in this movie.
I agree. Spectre sucked.
Skyfall was great.
AndyLouis You should absolutely watch the Mission Impossible movies!!!!
suicide squad. wtf, like seriously
For a movie to be considered overrated it has to actually be highly rated first...
okay captain you got me
Mad Max: Fury Road
chill bro that shit was epic.
Seriously, wow. That movie was phenomenal, one of the best pure action movies lately
Not just overrated but probably the worst movie EVER made
Saving Private Ryan. I am not saying it is a bad movie, because i did find it enjoyable, but it is highly overrated. Aside from the Omaha Beach scene (probably the best war scene in movie history), i found the rest of the movie pretty boring and predictable. I think a lot of people base their love of this movie on that first 20 minutes.
Saw Hell or High Water the other night, thought it was really good but not 98% on Rotten Tomatoes good.
No Country for Old Men
noooo that's one of my top favorites of all time
Normally I dislike these type of movies but this one was different. I felt like it had a really deep meaning to it.
All time #1 here
Austin Powers
Wolf of Wall Street......... I don't care how much monkey shit this attracts.
Fuck that movie and fuck all the highschool/ college losers that draw inspiration from that cinematographic equivalent of dog shit.
That movie was less about Leonardo DiCaprio being Jordan Belfort than it was about Leonardo DiCaprio being Leonardo DiCaprio.
+1
Trainwreck is garbage
Arrival and Loving. I thought both were slow and the acting was wooden.
Drive
the perfect movie if you need to take a nap. puts you right to sleep
Agree, and this was actually the better movie to come out of the Ryan Gosling-Nicolas Winding Refn pairing. Only God Forgives was 10 times worse.
GTFO!
Most underrated movie: Lion King.
There Will Be Blood
Dude..,
Any Nicholas Cage movie..
This thread makes me sad, not only from the topic but especially from the responses
I have nothing to say
Not a fan of some of the responses here, but it's your opinion.
Some that I can think of off the top of my head: Avatar Gone With the Wind Loving Moonlight The King's Speech
LOL at the monkey shits. People are so hurt.
This one might hurt some: The Godfather.
Forest gump, the titanic, pulp fiction, fight club
1.) I hate Forrest Gump 2.) I can't and never have gotten through Titanic in entirety, agreed here as well 3.) Don't ever disrespect Pulp Fiction, it deserves every accolade it gets 4.) Fight Club is really good but a bit overrated
Sharknado
99% of the new movies are shit. Complete rehashes of the (second) golden era of Hollywood. Even great directors like Tarantino have completely lost their touch.
You are bugging if you think Revenant doesn't live up to its hype.
I saw Minority Report the other day, definitely way too hyped up. Wasn't worth 4 stars on Roger Ebert. 3.5 maybe.
Pokémon: Arceus and the Jewel of Life.....if you know, you know.
Just saw the new Star Wars last night. Not going to spoil anything, but I think a lot of the die hard fans won't like it (it's nowhere near as formulaic as the others). That said, I really loved it and will probably see it again soon.
interstellar. great movie but that ending was way too ridiculous to justify a #32 ranking on imdb. they have this movie ranked above gladiator, braveheart, a clockwork orange, and the big lebowski to name a few. gtfo
Gladiator is at top 5 for me. Alexander, on the other hand, was one of the worst movies I've ever seen. A clear and complete disaster of an attempt at recreating one of the best action movies out there.
Crash. Worst movie to win best picture ever.
Any Vietnam war movie besides Apocalypse Now (Forrest Gump doesn't count).
Every Rocky movie besides Rocky I
I don't go on overratedness, I either think a movie is so bad its good, terrible, bad, okay, good, great, or awesome. Overrated merely means you let outsiders influence your thinking too much. I'll look at reviews to get a sense if I want to see a movie or not, but I don't take any stock in how much hype a movie has. Because there is only one thing that can happen, and that is a let down.
Bingo
God thank you, the Revenant was one of the worst movies I have eve seen.
The Revenant is as good as advertised
That Fantastic Beasts movie was utter garbage though, and I enjoy Harry Potter stuff typically
On the topic of 2015 movies, Spotlight, the best picture winner, was a mediocre bore. No drama, no stakes, no characters that were worth caring about.
Pretty shocked at the negative responses towards There Will be Blood. That movie is absolutely fantastic on so many different levels. The eerie soundtrack and landscape, Daniel Day Lewis becoming insane, the relationship between the church and capitalism/oil. And the ending scene is brilliant.
