What can you do to "prove" your interest in VC?
What can you do to "prove" your interest in VC, in a career change stand point?
When I say "prove" I mean a line on your resume. For example, you can take CFA level 1 exam if you're interested in AM or HF.
Invest in start-ups through angel list or something?
Okay, that's an idea. Do you think small investments via crowd funding sites would do? or should you go about investing at least $100K or more on actual companies like the angels?
No I'm sure much smaller companies and investments would do. Few hundred bucks here and there, maybe a couple of grand if you really want to. More about showing interest rather than actually investing.
Work at a startup in college, get involved in the startup community, actually start your own company, get on the board of a startup, go to hackathons, be on Twitter and tweet about startups, use new apps/products... really just know what's going on in your local entrepreneurial community.
Hackathons sound cool, but unfortunately, I'm computer illiterate and excel vba is like the closest thing I know to programming :(
I've never been to a hackathon, but from my understanding they are also looking for people with more "business" skills. At the end of the day, the best pitch wins, and a team full of coders, even with an awesome product, might not be able to sell it.
Network with existing VCs and become proficient in a relevant industry theme. In your networking, you can talk about the work you are doing in the given theme and turf up a few early stage names that are worthwhile for the VC to look at. Giving relevant leads will allow you to stand out from the crowd and show that you have a network of and rapport with entrepreneurs.
