What consulting firms should I target?
Hey guys, I'm about to enter my senior year this coming fall and just want to get an idea as to what consulting firms I should target.
Here's a little bit about my background:
School: Top 25 Target
Major: Financial Math, Minor: Business
GPA: 3.7
Work Experience: Corp Finance in F100 Logistics, Business Dev in 2 Startups
Solid leadership experience
I haven't been networking all that much, but plan to ramp up my efforts in the coming weeks.
Target MBB and spend 3-5 weeks preparing for case interviews via Victor Cheng's materials. Also target a few 2nd tier firms like Oliver Wyman, Deloitte, and ATK. These firms will be a little easier to receive an offer from.
Thanks for the reply! To be honest with you, I applied for internships at many of these firms last year and did not receive any interviews. It's possible that my resume was not as strong at the time, but I have doubts that I'll be able to land these firms. My networking abilities are also very weak, do you have any advice on how I can get a little bit more comfortable on that front?
That's a good resume. You guys nowadays have quite a lot of experience before finishing school. More props to you.
Depending on which office you are applying you should have no issue getting an interview to at least 2 MBBs. Now as mentioned before me you will need to work on you casing skills, there is no way around this.
I appreciate the encouragement and advice! While MBB sounds great, I have doubts about my odds with them, so I haven't been networking with them at all. Do you think I should send as many apps out as possible, or focus more time on the companies that I've networked with?
Given your experiences and the fact that other posters believe you'll get MBB interviews, why don't you network with MBB consultants? Surely there will be plenty of alumni you can reach out to coming from a top 25 target. Good luck!
I guess it has to do with not being able to land interviews during the last recruiting cycle, but I guess it certainly can't hurt to give it a shot! Thanks for the well wishes!
Your stats with a Target school should have at least landed some consideration. Did you have some issue with presentation (e.g., glaring mistakes in cover letters or poor resume construction)?
If I were you, I'd re-visit all my application materials and make sure I didn't just goober on a few points.
The nice thing about recruiting for consulting.....95% of the prep is the same regardless of what firms you are looking at. A case is a case, some small style things notwithstanding. A consulting resume will work for all firms. There's very little reason to not apply for them all.
It's the networking that's going to be the constraint; it isn't easy to grab coffee/make meaningful connections at 10+ firms. Start where your school has a good pipeline and make sure your bases are covered. Then start spreading out based on the connections you have.
