Think of them as a news anchor: they may or may not only read off the teleprompter. Each firm and every situation is different. In politics, they have a press secretary...companies have PR. They also work with the advertising section of the firm (or contractor if they farm it out) so they are a direct mouthpiece for the company.

Nice group of people, usually very attractive, sometimes are attention whores (look ma, I'm on TV!). Depending on the firm, they can be the most highly connected people in the firm outside of the c-suite, so be careful around them.
