What does my job sound like

For the past 6 years that I've been out of college I've either worked as an analyst or a "Controller" or "Business Unit Manager" for a business unit for a larger company (> $2 billion per year in revenue for parent co. I did management reporting, budgeting, presenting plans to Senior Management (up to COO), some month-end accounting stuff (inventory, expense reclasses, had to sign off financials were fairly stated, etc. but most of our accounting intensive stuff was done off-site at corporate or operations HQs). I was relocated to another business unit and actually given a completely unrelated title and unrelated work initially.

Then came the interesting part, my Operations VP told me he was going to start having me do work for him. I was given the "point man" position to get a small acquisition done. I met with a bunch of VPs, did all of the modeling and justification and have been working on this project (it's a completely unrelated business to us, it's just vertical integration for cost control purposes). So I have been working on a team with various operations, financial accounting, tax accounting, legal, IT, etc. upper management on getting the systems set up for this business and getting it integrated. I will be cultivating it and getting it off the ground before I'm put on some other work which I have no idea what it will be. It was really an honor because, again, this is a new frontier for us and not something we're accustomed in dealing in.

What type of work is this? Is this M&A work? It wasn't a big acquisition. Do M&A people generally have to integrate the business as well? What type of jobs do you think my work experience qualifies me for?

I've also been working on some other things of my own conception to drive down costs (tax, insurance, procurement and working capital improvements) that will probably help bring down our cost by $2-4 million per year.

I'm just interested because my company doesn't spend a lot of time on titles. The Operations VP has brought up my "career" and that he has a plan a BUNCH over the past four months or so, I'm just trying to figure out what in the hell I'm being groomed for.
