Excel for Equity Research
I was told that knowing as much about statistical formulas/applications of excel are very important for ER. Can anyone enlighten me as to why?

Not true. You need to be good with reading numbers but you don't necessarily data mine for trends and use statistical thrms such as cramer rao lower bound in doing analysis of variance trends. Yah dig.
yeah, some analysts use models without a single line of VBA let alone statistical analysis
You have acess to books and cheat sheet at work . If you gwt stuck ask a sr analyst and he most probably have a macro someone made.
Short answer No
Long asnwer it will help you if you know some stuff but if your supervisor dosent know abt it he will ask you to stick to the script

I am current a student and want to enhance my excel skills and hope that I could land a internship for equity research. What kind of excel skills, specific functions that I need to master? Typically most excel books are covering so many topics and are like reference books.

I was just wondering how much Excel knowledge must I possess in order to perform day to day function for Equity Research? (at an associate level).
Thanks!
not much, based on using sell-side equity research the last few years (nyuk nyuk nyuk)
Ok thanks, cuz my excel knowledge is fairly limited, and I was hoping I wouldnt make a fool out of myself.
You definitely need to know your way around pretty well, but you don't need to worry about building macros and things like that.
rj roberts, by pretty well, how well is pretty well? Can you give some examples also? I am somewhat green with excel, I dont use it everyday for work. Heck, I dont even use it for school much.
nothing too complicated...efficiency is important. Basically, just know the basic shortcuts and the main functions..won't need to build macros
