Portfolio managers tend to be the people who actually manage the money. Client portfolio managers tend to interact with clients, a la sales--so they do RFPs, monthly updates, etc.
Obviously, the first role has significantly more upside but requires a more sophisticated sense for investment, while the second requires you to be a strong sales person who has some investment related skills.
