If it's an older guy, it means he's been around the block a few times and he knows his shit and you should listen to whatever he says.
If it's a younger guy, it means he has very high aspirations in life, but isn't there yet. He hasn't yet realized the bow tie alone won't get him there.
+1.
A person who doesn't know how to dress well.

A waiter or maitre d'
I feel like it would be a sort of prerogative that should only be taken by the experienced and proven, but setting yourself apart from the crowd definitely makes sense.
Somebody who dresses to have some fun and change things up, instead of dressing that standard charcoal suit/white shirt/blue tie/black shoes maybe?
Direct quote from my friends gay little brother, "Bowties are for queers and geriatrics. No one else. No one."
Professors. Maybe people who work on the street who used to be professors or are phd's. Nerds who are just absolutely embracing it.

How are bow ties viewed on the street? Would it be inappropriate if I wore Vineyard vines bow tie with a suit?

What about clip ons? Do you think people will be able to tell?
Tom Keene and Pee Wee Herman
don't forget Jim Rogers and Chuck Royce
Terrible trolling. This has been done already. Use the search function
Seriously?
Yeah, I much rather wear a clip on. A nice looking one. I don't think people will be able to tell the difference, will they?
bow ties are classy as fuck, but they are definitely not for the office, especially in a place like NY. as for clip ons, don't do it. just no.
outside of work though they're a great call with a pocket square: http://www.vineyardvines.com/category__14620_14620_____13054

vv is nice, but i prefer southern proper http://www.southernproper.com/store/gentlemen/beaus.html
No clip on.
You're only going to be wearing a bow tie to black tie type events. Don't look like a cheese dick.
rock the bowtie like a boss
Actually, when I asked I wasn't trolling. I was just curious.
anyone who's anyone knows a clip-on when they see it. it looks tacky. just don't do it. part of the beauty of a real bow tie comes from its asymmetrical look
Where the bow tie. However it looks better and demands respect when you look like you tied it yourself. Therefore look for freestyle or self-tied bow ties.
No no no... you have it all wrong. I'd recommend a lime green suit with an electric piano tie. Make sure you wear bright pink shoes and top hat. Also, a neon-colored cane would look nice (shows you are mature and have class). Some faux gold teeth usually show that you go the extra mile. If you want to appear that you have excellent social/interpersonal skills, maybe bring a few women along (one for each arm usually will cut it) in sleazy outfits (to make the MD horny if nothing else)
Basically try to look like this guy >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Bow ties are awesome. I just wouldn't wear it to work everyday. A bit extra.
Yea its once on occasion for me

People generally do not wear bow ties to work. But they are the best pair for a tux and mostly suit parties and other such occasions.
