What kind of social life and recreational activities that I could expect to be able to do as a first year analyst?
I have a question about what kind of social life I could expect as a first year analyst. I am a member of a fraternity and I am thinking about joining the graduate chapter, which would probably have meetings every two weeks, as well continue boxing and possibly pick up tennis lessons. I also have a medical condition that might require medical visits monthly or every two months. Can I expect to be able to do these meetings an possible boxing a few times a week?
If no could people shed light on their life outside of work as a first year? When I interned in my group over the summer, one analyst who was a second year seemed to do all kind of fund raising activities for philanthropy groups he was part of.
key note: the second year was a SECOND year
your first year, you are expected to be on call 24/7. The group doesn't care where you are, but you better be close to the office/computer when you are doing the extracurricular stuff
Your first 6 months will be hell with no social life/recreation activities. It gets a lot better as you go along.
I would love to see the look on your associate's face when you tell him you have to dip out of the office for a fraternity chapter meeting....also i would schedule that tennis lesson for 7am on Sunday
Probably not unreasonable to be able to have one hobby, but you won't be able to commit to anything that meets regularly. I'd recommend joining a 24 hour gym, but don't schedule boxing or tennis sessions because you'll never be able to guarantee your attendance.
Expect to have no life.
Nothing scheduled - everything will be last minute unfortunately. Medical appointments obviously ok.
Other activities (life) while an IB analyst (Originally Posted: 12/01/2011)
Hi guys.
I'm starting in M&A soon. What is the likelihood that I will be able to play a game of sport on a Sunday afternoon, and get along to one practice session of a week night (around 6-8pm)? Will this fly? Who should I ask about this once I start? My MD?
BB, boutique, 1 man shop?
Haha that's aggressive as shit, right out of the gate trying to schedule a weekly event... Doubtful...
I would say you have about a 10% chance of making the game and 0% chance of making anything around 6 during the week. Don't even bother asking.
Don't mean to be rude - but did you do your research? Do you have any idea what you signed up for?
I can answer that for him no.
Dude, don't listen to these guys. You'll definitely be able to make your Excel Shortcuts League practice session at 6 pm every week. Games should be no trouble either. League tables aren't just for banking revenues anymore after all.
Definitely won't be able to count on going every time, but it's fairly reasonable that you'd be able to make it on Sunday afternoons sometimes. Weeknight, not so much.
How many silly questions have you posted in the last week? Did you do any research into IB before you applied?
if your game involves playing with you MD's balls, then yes..youll be able to do it every night
Fucking hell!!!
Buyside or bust....just sayin
TROLL
I'm not going to be as pessimistic as everyone else here and say that you might be able to get away with it, but obviously things might come up. At my bank, analyst went to the gym after dinner when everyone else was already gone - a little later than 6-8 but still. Your MD won't be at the office at 8, he doesn't have to know as long as you get your work done and have a cool associate.
If I get my analyst offer I'm not gonna set my expectations high for outside activities. Get to the gym when possible. Ski when possible in the winter. Skydive when possible in the spring/summer. No serious GF during my analyst stint. Live for myself (and the MD) for the time being.
and your associate, and your vp...on every deal team. and your staffer.
Stop with these retarded questions. And stop referring to a FT gig at RBS as "M&A".
If you work for a cool associate and he's comfortable with your work, you should be able to jump out to the gym during the week assuming nothing is live or time sensitive.
