What Should I Focus On?
Dear WSO,
I'm an incoming freshman majoring in finance at a Non-target. My goal is to get a job on Wall Street, preferably in banking. Over the summer, I've been skimming through industry overviews, tech interview questions and valuations. Recently, I've been thinking that perusing valuations and tech interviews might not be worth the time. Instead, time spent on developing social skills and salesmanship might be better since I'm still somewhat young. What do you recommend to a college freshman wanting to stay ahead doing? What should I focus on?
What I have in mind:
- Transfer to a target
- Get a 3.5+ GPA
- Network
- Internship after Freshman year (ex. PWM)
WSO has been a constant "recently visited page" for me as I continually receive helpful information from real and avid financial professionals. I would greatly appreciate any feedback and thanks taking your precious time to read this.
TL;DR: Incoming freshman in college. Don't know what to prioritize since I don't want to get too ahead of myself. Would appreciate any advice.
Go bang some girls and stop being a finance fag. There's more to life that career, especially as a freshman in college. I'm trying to figure out what to focus on as well, but as a junior who needs to make a decision for the crucial upcoming summer, I'd highly recommend you spend time enjoying yourself and not worrying about what WSO has to offer just yet

Since your goal is to transfer to a target, I recommend striving for the highest GPA, not just anything above a 3.5.
Along with GPA, be active in clubs at school. Considering how young you are, it really is not necessary for you to study the specifics of IB. Around the second semester of your sophomore year, you should begin to look at specifics.
