What to buy with some extra coin: BBQ smoker or new golf clubs

I was originally saving money to pay for my fraternity dues, because I will be starting college at an SEC school next year. However, I have decided to delay my rush until Sophomore year for a variety of excellent reasons. I am now planning on what I should spend around $2k.

I have narrowed my choices down to a new set of golf clubs or a tailgating BBQ smoker trailer.

Thoughts?

Considerations:
I am attending the University of Tennessee
I am terrible at golf
I want to be good at golf
I am excellent at smoking BBQ

Smoker by a mile. If you are big on BBQ'ing like that then most certainly do it. You can always get golf clubs for a good price down the road, tons of ways to achieve that.

Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please.

Both? Buy the smoker and a cheap set of clubs. No sense in buying expensive clubs when you are learning the game

Bobb's got it right. Throw a great keg party this fall, then do this: http://www.instructables.com/id/Beer-Keg-Smoker/ Make your own "keg smoker", paint a Tennessee orange "T" on it, (the smoker will be a great starting point to converse with girls on campus), then buy some decent clubs. It'll take some work, but it would be cool to tell people that you built it yourself.

for like 1k you could get a decent set of irons, a few woods and a putter. Christ, I'm an avid golfer and I use a set of Taylormade Tour Burners I bought for like $499 a few years back. you don't need to drop stacks on a custom set of MB's and a 915 D2 if you're just starting out. go to you're local Golfsmith (or equivalent) and shop the sale/previous years rack, guarantee you'll find a great set of clubs for under a grand.

With that extra money, buy a smoker and have the best of both worlds.

Like @"FeedMeDealFlow" said get some used irons. I got my Taylormade RBZ's on taylormadepreowned.com and they were like $350 with a free wedge. Check out calloway's preowned site too they usually have good deals. Grab a fairway wood, driver, and putter on eBay/craigslist/a deal site and you are set for like ~$500 with a decent bag. Also, where would you store a smoker if you are (presumably) living in the dorms?

This to all my hatin' folks seeing me getting guac right now..

I would never buy new clubs. Unless you play at par, the new "hot" clubs won't make a difference in a golfer's game. It's more important to buy clubs that properly fit, and then get proper lessons. I just got out there and played for years with clubs that weren't the proper length and zero lessons. My game is pretty much screwed. Too much to undo, so I'll always be fighting to get under 100. Oh well, my tennis game is still bitching and my road racing keeps me busy!

You can spend way less on golf clubs, especially if initially you aren't that good, what maybe you should do is put some of the money towards lessons. I started to play golf after graduating, for 2 seasons now, about to start my third. Finally took lessons at the end of last season, now I am really confident, and look forward to a season of dramatic improvement after only 4 lessons

When you join a frat you're gonna go to their tailgate anyways, so some may say dropping 2 grand on a smoker is a bit excessive. I'd buy a decent set of pre-owned clubs and save the rest so you have cash available whenever an opportunity to get something awesome shows up over the next year. If not, get a decent fake id and make it rain at a strip club.

I also am an avid golfer, and unfortunately college is not the time to pick up the game. I went from a scratch handicap in high school to a 5 handicap after a semester of college and have been fighting my way back since. Also, as a college kid it is pretty expensive to play at school. You should buy a 2010 set of titleists, a used driver, some decent wedges and a putter for $600. Go to the range, maybe take a lesson or two, or take it as an elective. Play or practice once a week and you'll reach levels that are respectable and you can tone it up over the summer.

As someone who grew up in the south, there is no better way to get the attention of a southern belle than some fantastic BBQ. I see no reason why you can't have both. Good luck in school.

Really? I've seen a lot of schools (midwest at least) where the students get ridiculously low rates for golf (~$20 for a round). Unless you mean even the really cheap rates are a lot for a college kid -- then that makes sense.
