What to do all summer without an internship/job? (summer before Junior year)
I am a rising junior at Georgetown with a decent GPA (3.5) and although I know I most likely won't be able to make a case for this during an interview or anything, I had some extreme personal (family, medical, and money related) circumstances that affected my academic year. Although I was able to maintain my GPA, I was unable to apply for any internships since I had no option but to return home (very small town) & take care of these issues for the summer.
So I'm stuck at home & need some advice for what I can do to be proactive for the next three months although I do not get a lot of time to myself or to leave my house. I feel really behind as most of my friends are interning this summer in NYC or Chicago and I will be studying abroad in the U.K. (with a passport only, a student Visa is financially not an option for me anymore, so I cannot intern there). I have been interning as an accountant and human resources representative at my school's credit union since freshman year, but that's the only impressive thing I have on my resume (other things are a part-time retail job, some extracurriculars but nothing outstanding).
I am interested in getting into transaction services or something similar but I'm nervous at how much my sophomore year will have an affect on my ability to obtain an internship next summer, especially being abroad in the fall and missing out on a lot of networking opportunities.
I am currently working on my own business model for a company I hope to open someday, but I seldom have time for this as well. Please let me know if you have any advice as to what I can be doing to make up for lost time! Thank you.
Do one of the WSO internships! Aren't they remote too?
Try finding a remote internship. There are many firms willing to do that. Try reaching out to alumni of your college via LinkedIn.
Do some political campaign work if you can't find something. Builds connections, pretty fun and fills any gap on a resume.

hey guys, i ended up without any internship during this summer. i am a junior now, getting ready for summer recruiting, and i wonder what is a good way to answer a question about the past summer. would something along the lines "i did not find an internship, but i studied modeling on my own and read books about the industry, and learned be much more persistent from this experience" be an ok excuse? thank you.
Did you work, study abroad, take extra classes? As long as your answer isn't went to the beach everyday I would be honest and then maybe add about you doing some extra reading on your own---just make sure you watch out for the WMDs I mentioned in my big post.
Don't say you studied modelling. Reading relevant books suffices for communicating interest. As gekko would say, 'I studied modelling' is a WMD. You could very easily get destroyed.
Excellent point.
Focus on what you DID in the summer (of importance and relevance) and not on what you didn't (i.e. no internship).
yeah, don't say you studied modeling at all.
Just say what you actually did and leave out the part about smoking so many joints and becoming globally ranked in halo.
What do you guys think would look better: Saying you just studied relevant books and not getting screwed over in an interview? Or being more specific with what you studied, getting to know it like the back of your hand, and destroying the subject in an interview?
.
cmon dude u must have done something... tell him what you did. nobody wants to hear about your JV modeling skills at this point.
What to do during the summer if you do not have a summer internship? (Originally Posted: 02/25/2012)
Tried everything possible. Applications, interviews, talking to people on Linkedin, cold calling boutiques, etc.
Till now I only received either rejections or applications still under consideration. I am quite worried because some of my peers had already received internship offers.
Anything else to keep me occupied during the summer? I could study for the CFA Level II exams but that ends in Jun. For the rest of the summer, I don't know what I should do. I could read up more on the financial industry but I don't think that is something good to write about in resumes.
Anyone having the same problem as me? :(
If you're a junior: find any internship you can, even if unpaid.
If freshman/sophomore: study abroad.
yea I even told the boutiques i could work for free. they said they understand and would let me know again if they want to hire me for an internship.
i think its not whether its paid or unpaid internship, its whether there is additional work or not. i think the boss considered that it will not look nice if u hire an intern n u haf no work to give to him. Plus they will incur time and costs in training me on what to do.
study abroad as in what sense? anyway, thats not cheap too.
What year in school are you?
graduating with a Masters in Finance in 2013.
take some classes in the summer and boost your GPA, it is what I am doing. I must note I made no attempt to get an internship, too.

What year in school are you? You can't take the CFA until you're a senior.
