Music for making it rain

Hi!
Do you rainmakers have any songs you listen to for motivation? I need a playlist to get in the spirit of competition, but have practically no songs to compose said playlist. Despite having an okay taste in music (jazz, mostly) I become Paris Hilton when the music needs to turn me into a sober version of Mark Hanna.

It's impressive as I'm not one to often find a lot of songs off one album that pump me up, but this does it for me. Throw it on at the gym or in the office when doing repetitive work and it helps me push through.

Remember making it rain is a dance. However, a few albums come to mind:

Iron Maiden - Live After Death White Zombie - La Sexorcisto Waylon Jennings - Live AC/DC - Powerage AC/DC - If you want blood you've got it Slayer - Seasons in the Abyss Metallica - Kill Em All

Only two sources I trust, Glenn Beck and singing woodland creatures.

Best Response

Simply Irresistible - Robert Palmer Sussudio - Phil Collins Addicted to Love - Robert Palmer Hip to Be Square - Huey Lewis and the News

Cheer up, Bateman. What's the matter? No shiatsu this morning?

In '87, Huey released this ... Fore!, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is 'Hip to Be Square,' a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the band itself.

Either Metallica, System of a Down, AC/DC, Rage Against the Machine, etc.

Or... Jay-Z, Nas, Twista, etc.

One great rapper (at least great to work out to) is Tech Nine, but a lot of people have never heard of him.

And Smalltalk, you WILL NOT build any significant strength/mass doing 3 exercises, 2 days per week.

NEVER lose your BlackBerry www.conveniencesoftware.com

Small talk if your looking to put on mass i would advise you to drink a protein beverage WHILE you work out and eat straight up two spoons of peanut butter afterwards with milk to wash it down. Working out 4 to 5 days is ideal to build mass. Also try and concentrate on particular muscles each day. It sounds like your new to this, so don't go to heavy and hurt yourself and have a partner. Also remember challenge yourself and your muscles.

Smalltalk,

Your workout is not a good routine for building mass. As dipset mentioned, drink your protein shakes (1-1.5 x bodyweight = grams of protein needed to build muscle); also, be sure to eat 3000+ calories (good calories), take vitamins (multi, BCAA), and add in creatine if you can.

But for an effective mass-building routine, you need to lift heavy. When I say heavy, I mean 85-90% of your max one rep (but this only applies to compound exercises i.e. bench press, deadlifts, and squats). If you are a starter, go light and practice learning form -- the ability to lift weights comfortably without sacrificing form.

Regarding the OP's question,

Wasteland by 10 Years.

Megadeth, System of a Down, SOME Creed (think What If), NWA, GNR, Disturbed (Droppin' Plates is a great one), Rage Against the Machine, Slipknot, Drowning Pool, Slayer, Sebastian Bach, Skid Row, Sepultura (Roots BLOODY ROOTS!), Pantera (especially Walk), Marilyn Manson, Lamb of God, early Metallica, and Body Count...to name a few

So what do you do? -I work for an investment banking firm. Oh okay; you are like my brother, he works for Edward Jones. -No, a college degree is required in my profession

Reality hits you hard, bro...

Also if Sepultura scares yu listen to Refuse-Resist...its good for workout and less of the screaming death metal of Roots Bloody Roots

Something that no one has mentioned yet, your definitely doing your reps wrong if you want to build mass. To build mass you want to get progressively heavier through your workout. For example to 10-8-6-4 not to the point your maxing out but in that order and adding weight each time. Make sure you get all reps in even if you have to have help. This is the best way I've found to help with strength. (Old football workout).

Oh and as for workout music, the usually rap jay-z and so on then disturbed, drowning pool - bodies, trapt - headstrong. Just a few off the top of my head.

his workout is basically a variation of Rippetoe's starting strength which is the standard pretty much for noobs trying to get big. instead of getting progressively heavier through your workout, you start at roughly 30% less than your max and get progressively heavier per week.

music: tiesto, justice

Try listening to some German techno.

Drex are you sure that you run 10-20 miles a day? 26 miles is a marathon and I highly doubt you run a half marathon each day.

Smalltalk if you want to put on some mass then break down your workouts by muscle groups:

Back Chest Delts Triceps Biceps Neck Abs Forearms Quads Gluts Hamstrings Calves Abductors Adductors

That is 14 different muscle groups, and you need to work out each muscle group every 4-6 days. You can go to the gym 4 days a week and work out 5 muscles each workout day. To put on mass you should do 3 different exercises, 3-4 sets, 8-12 reps to failure (and then more with help) for the bigger muscles (back, quads etc.) and 2-3 exercises, 3-4 sets, 8-12 reps for smaller muscles, and one excercise (3 sets) for the least important muscles (neck, ab - adductors etc.).

You are probably looking at 150 - 200 sets of 8-12 reps per week, with a 1-2 minute rest in between sets, you will need to spend 8-10 hours in the gym per week, and get as much rest as possible. You will need to eat properly and take your vitamins and proteins. The more corners you cut the less mass you will gain.

I once did this routine for two months and I put on 25 pounds (most of it was muscle, and almost 20 lbs. came in the first month) in two months. I got such big stretch marks where my triceps connects with my back that I had to stop working out.

I got back to working out about 2 months ago and do about half of what recommended above (lack of time) and do not see much gain in mass, but I did lose over 10 pounds in fat.

Hope that helps, but it is best to do more research by reading Flex or Muscle and Fitness magazines.

Don't forget to warm up and stretch, if you are new to this then start with 1 exercise, 1-2 sets per muscle and work your way up.

Usually more towards the ten end, but yeah, I've been doing that pretty much since high school. It's not that high once you're in long distance shape. I usually don't have one block of time that long though, so it's more like running 5 miles in the morning and 5 miles in the evening.

And I second you on the breaking down by muscle group, I rarely bulk up but that is the best way I've found of adding muscle mass, and basically how most of the really huge guys I know structure their workouts.

There are some worthless responses in this thread. I'm not even to comment on the gross overgeneralizations regarding workout and diet advice.

Creed? Really? Dude, really? Staind?!

As far as I'm concerned, techno, pop, rap, hip-hop- all trash for a hard lifting session. You need something that will make you want to destroy the guy standing next to you, something that will ignite bloodlust and the thirst for destruction.

All That Remains (This Calling, The Deepest Gray, This Darkened Heart, Vicious Betrayal....) Bloodbath DevilDriver In Flames Lamb of God (Ruin, In Defence Of Our Good Name, Laid to Rest, Foot To The Throat, 11th Hour...) Machine (FUCKING) Head (Aesthetics of Hate, Wolves, Imperium, In The Presence of My Enemies) Slipknot Strapping Young Lad (Oh My Fucking God) The Faceless Trivium

Anybody who disagrees is a pussy.

..or if i'm at the gym, I usually record screams and the sounds of chainsaws buzzing on my iPod and pump up to that.

(anyone get the reference?)

The world has changed. And we must change with it.

------------ I'm making it up as I go along.

Get some of the harder White Snake, Great White ("Rock ME"), Europe ("final countdown"), Foreigner, even some Stevie Nicks. I would also add some Iron Maiden (The Trooper) to make this list a little tougher. If this doesn't make you want to work out it makes you at list want to hit the bottle hard. That hardcore shit ie: System of a Down was for pussies in High School who thought Goth made them a non-conformist.

Throw in some Illmatic/Stillmatic from Nas, Rick Ross, and some old BTNH to make the list complete.

cornelius, nice american psycho ref

also there is some pretty bad advice floating alone these forums. as i stated in the other thread, rippetoe is the standard workout for building mass and strength, hit up the bodybuilding.com forums and run a search and you will see it recommended over and over. do it for 3 months, eat right (1.5-2x g protein/ body weight), good carbs, healthy fats, and lift hard and you'll get big, plain and simple.

stk- 200 sets a week?? are you nuts, that is overkill.

12 sets (4 exercises x 3 sets each) x 3-4 days a week =36-48 sets a week

Drex - that is pretty impresive. Do you have any knee problems from all this running or do you run on your toes to take pressure of your knees?

I agree that 150-200 sets per week is a lot, but that is probably only half of what professional bodybuilders do per week. I probably do 80 - 100 per week, but I am not looking to add too much muscle mass, rather strength and stamina.

If you target all 14 muscle groups I mentioned 1.5x per week = 21 muscle groups per week. 150-200 / 21 = 7 - 10 sets per muscle group, which is a minimum for advanced gym rats to build muscle mass.

If you are new to this, then you can do just about anything and you will gain strength and mass for the first few weeks, months. But if you are serious about working out then you need to target every single muscle group in your body, otherwise you will become injury prone because some muscles will be very strong, while others are very week.

For example if you workout your deltoids, you need to do 3 sets for the front portion, 3 sets for the middle part, and 3 for your rear deltoid (which is very hard to target, I know only of 2 excercises for the rear part of the muscle, and one exercise I kind of made up myself). I have a buddy who got into working out seriously but never knew about the rear delt and never targeted it, and tore his rotator cuff because that part was too weak and out of balance with the rest of the muscle, and now he has a big shoulder problem for the rest of his life.

I am not familiar with the rippetoe, but from what I read it has you doing like 8 different exercises per week. This is fine if you are a beginner, but if you do this for a year then your muscles will be extremely out of balance strengthwise and you will be getting injured a lot.

If you want to work out the right way, then target every single muscle at least once a week, and change the exercises that you do on a regularly basis to target different parts of each muscle, e.g. for your chest do bench press one week, then incline press the next, then flies then decline press etc. so that the pec muscle developes evenly. And read flex magazine or muscle and fitness, they know what they are talking about.

What?! Nooo way dude. I couldn't disagree more. You're talking about 2 different things and then jumping all over the place. First of all, training for size is different than training for strength. If you want to train for size (and be all show and no go) then sure, do ~6-10 reps on each set and do isolation movements. But you have to know that doing this won't work unless you already have sufficient mass and size to manipulate. You can't weigh a buck 10 and think doing curls and tricep extension is going to get you HUUGE arms. Also, who the hell does curls and tricep extensions (go die if you do)

So long story short, if you're looking to get STRONG, not just LOOK strong, then you don't need to do any isolation or target every muscle, I don't care what any bodybuilding magazine has to say (especially when you're looking at bodybuilding mags, where they train for size not strength). As for changing up routines, I think that goes without saying. Everyone knows that you need to change up the exercises so that the muscles don't get into a routine and then you plateau. Obviously there is a lot more to it, but I just wanted to correct you so that newbs don't go out there reading bodybuilding magazines when all they're trying to do is get stronger.

You're misguidedness is why I see people doing curls in the squat rack. I'll say hi to you next time I'm in the gym (and tell you to get the hell off the rack if you're not squatting).

I was a sprinter though most of high school so am used to running on my toes, but in my senior year I tore my calf playing soccer and now when I run on my toes for too long it cramps up horribly. Fortunately, I don't live in the city so get to do most of my running in the woods or on paths, which takes a lot of the pressure off. I'm young though, I suspect I'll have knee problems down the road, but that's something I'm willing to live with.

One more thing...don't knock What If by Creed if you haven't listened to it.

Also my favorite workout song is probably Perfect Crime by Guns N' Roses (GN'R)
